 Probing the York River shipwrecks

A research team led by veterans of the USS Monitor and RMS Titanic underwater archaeological expeditions found promising evidence this week that could lead to excavations of British ships sunk in the York River during the 1781 Siege of Yorktown.

Organized by Yorktown-based JRS Explorations Inc., the team used a high-resolution sector-scanning sonar to survey more than 30 targets on the Yorktown and Gloucester sides of the river in the first comprehensive probe of the wrecks since 1990.
