House Speaker Paul Ryan's announcement that he isn't seeking re-election sent shockwaves through Wisconsin politics, forcing Republicans to scramble to find his successor and boosting Democrat hopes to flip his district.

Ryan's move prompted widespread speculation about which Republican candidates would get into the 1st Congressional District race.

Possible candidates include Reince Priebus, former White House chief of staff, and Assembly Speaker Robin Vos. Another name to emerge was University of Wisconsin-System Regent Bryan Steil, a member of a longtime Janesville political family.

The main GOP candidate to date is Paul Nehlen, who has drawn widespread criticism over anti-Semitic and racist remarks and social media posts.

Ryan, who won't endorse in the GOP primary, made it clear he will not be supporting Nehlen.

"There are many qualified conservatives who would be effective representatives for Wisconsin’s 1st Congressional District, and Paul Nehlen isn’t one of them," longtime Ryan aide Kevin Seifert said Wednesday.

Priebus, the former White House chief of staff under President Donald Trump, could easily mount a credible campaign if he desired, observers say.

Hey, maybe a serious conservative will run and win the seat.

We can only hope.

It would be nice if it was someone who has done something outside of govt.

Didn't he announce this sometime back?  Why are they just now scrambling?

Nope.  Ryan announced he was stepping down this week.  His seat was secured and only neonazi Paul Nehlen had declared as a Republican candidate.  Filing deadline is July 1st.  Primary day is Aug 14th for WI
