Some of the best inventions happen by accident.

When Mike Mitton stumbled upon cavitation reactor technology, purifying water was the furthest thing from his mind.

“This actually started out a race car part. We started to design this high-speed valve system to control the inlet and exhaust stream from racing engines, ” Mitton said at a Friday press conference at Frank Millard and Co. in Burlington. “When we started developing the technology, we had to figure out what kind of flow the valves had. So we started using water as a medium.”

Mitton, who was showing off his invention Friday, said it didn’t go as planned.

“So we started running water through these high-speed valves. And it started making all kinds of noises,” he said.

After some investigation, Mitton and his crew figured out what those noises were — cavitation. More importantly, they found out what that means.
