At least 125 people — including a dozen high school kids — in Milwaukee have been infected with HIV, syphilis, or both in one of the biggest outbreaks ever reported in the city.

According to Milwaukee’s Journal Sentinel, which broke the story on Tuesday, the outbreak has been identified as a “cluster,” meaning a large number of people have become infected in a particular time and place.

“This is an epidemic people are not talking about enough, and it leads to people taking unnecessary risks,” public health consultant Melissa Ugland told the Journal Sentinel.   ...

 â€œThis is unacceptable,” wrote executive director David C. Harvey. “Those of us working in the field know that STD prevention works when it’s funded. Investing just 10 cents per person per year in syphilis prevention could cut the number of syphilis cases by almost a third.”

He added, “Congress must recognize that these epidemics will continue to rage if federal investment does not rise to meet the ever-rising tide of STD rates, and we call on Congress to increase federal funding for STD prevention at CDC.”   ....

Despite increased awareness and medical advancement, young people in Pennsylvania and the United States at large are facing a massive resurgence of sexually-transmitted diseases.

Dr. Frank DiCenco, of AHN’s Premier Women’s Health in Sewickley, PA, is “quite concerned.” DiCenco and his practice have “seen an uptick in the number of Gonorrhea and Chlamydia cases,” concluding that “the younger population is more promiscuous today than probably ever before.”

Gonorrhea, in particular, was up by 34%, while HIV increased by nearly 300%. Allegheny County Health Department Director Dr. Karen Hacker has stated that “incidence rates for Syphilis, Chlamydia, Gonorrhea and HIV have and continue to exceed the state’s incidence rates.”

But the problem is not merely local, nor even statewide. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, STDs have reached a “record high, indicating urgent need for prevention.”  ...

It is all over. They are active at 12 in some cases, IMHO a result of being bombarded with sex at every turn (and maybe some hormones/equivalents in the food supply).

It tells me that they are having unprotected sex with several people. People feel AIDS is no longer a threat to them so anything goes.

A friend taught Sex Education to teen moms. She demonstrated deployment of a condom to them. One asked her "What if he refuses to wear it?". My friend responded "Say No to sex with him". The teen retorted "If I could do that, I wouldn't be here".

Porn is a terrible problem in society. It deadens the morality part of the mind. Imagine if men watched large amounts of video where a woman is raped and turns out to really like it. IOW rape turns out to be beneficial to her. Well, welcome to where we are.

The problem is getting people - especially in government - to see this isn't just a public health issue, it's a moral issue.
