That's a silly comment. Most cops have never drawn their weapon in their careers and not every military man is sent to a war zone. For crying out loud, I carry a weapon more than the average soldier because the are not allowed to outside of a conflict.

No, it's not silly @Frank Cannon

Carrying a gun and being able to use one in a school hallway are two different things.   If you think former LE and military personnel don't have an advantage in shooting a human in a chaotic situation, how well do you think a teacher armed for the first time would perform?

If you want to prevent a good guy freezing or friendly fire casualties, former law enforcement and military are the best bet.  Notice I said "bet".

While that is true, IMHO, those not ex-military or ex-law enforcement who are properly trained would be less likely to panic or freeze.  I'm not talking about your typical concealed class at a gun show, but a class that not only teaches one to handle a weapon, but also takes them through the mental exercises and different scenarios to prepare them mentally for carrying a gun.

Shooting a kid you know takes special psychological training and experience. Additionally, one friendly fire casualty and this house of cards collapses.  It's all a crap shoot .... but I still think the best odds of winning are with former LE and especially former military.

Sadly,it has been MY experience that there are many people who freak out and get terrified when you make them face the reality of understanding they might actually HAVE to shoot someone. Many people seem to live under the illusion that just having a gun will make the bad guys disappear. Real life just doesn't work out that way. If a bad guy thinks you are afraid to shoot,chances are he is going to take your gun away from you and shoot you with it.

That's not a problem I am ever going to have to face,and I have been in several situations where I MIGHT have even been justified in shooting if I had wanted. For some reason laughing at people who want to threaten you seems to throw them off and make them scared.

The conceal carry class that I took was held for several hours weekly, for 4 weeks.  The first 3 weeks was spent on mentally preparing those in our class and walking us through different scenarios. At the end of 3 weeks, if one did not feel they could mentally handle carrying a weapon or using a weapon in self defense, they were asked to leave.  We went from a class of 12 down to a class of 9.  We only spent a couple hours going over how to handle a gun and then we each had to qualify shooting from different positions and in different scenarios.  I am proud to say I scored a perfect 10 out of 10!

That's a myth.  Plenty of capable people inside and outside those organizations.

Right. Because there isn't a story a day where some local Barnie Fife panicked and shot an innocent bystander in some incident.

I don't know about where you live but my local constabulary is staffed with a bunch a para military filth who were too unstable to pass the state police test. They are barely qualified to operate a pen to write a ticket. I would also like to remind you about the quality of the Broward Sheriff officers.

It would probably depend on the kid. Seems like a lot of people knew this particular one was a danger. Nevertheless, there’s a huge problem in making schools a free fire zone. You’ve got people inside that cannot communicate with each other, much less law enforcement.  Blue on blue is inevitable.

Don't blame ME if YOU can't handle the truth.

Calling you an idiot is bragging on you.  If there is no reason to hold them,the cops/courts MUST return their weapons.

Logic ain't your strong point,is it?

I've been more than fair with you in the past and treated you with respect regarding moderation of your comments on the Constitution Party board that several people found inflammatory.  I see that you are not honorable enough to reciprocate.

@Frank Cannon

The most direct danger I was in while in the military was due to incompetent military police who almost shot me.  Because the all clear wasn't communicated to the cops upstairs.

Good for you!

A strange little secret not many people want to admit is that the surest way to get killed is to threaten a woman who has a gun. Lots of guys have filled their heads with Macho nonsense that makes them think they are fearless and in control,but most women don't suffer from such stupidity. Scare a woman and she WILL kill the hell out of you using whatever she can get her hands on. If she has a gun,chances are she is going to shoot you with every bullet in it,and then reload if she has the chance,and empty it into you again.

AND......,she is going to get away with it.

You have to be a fool to try to scare anybody holding a gun on you,and that goes double if it is a woman.

Sadly,that is becoming more true with each passing day. It's to the point now where I heard cops making fun of those creeps at a rifle range one day when I was helping a friend run a qualification program for surplus Garands. One guy showed up that had been let go by at least two,and MAYBE  three different police departments for being a Rambo wannabe flake,and he showed up wearing the  uniform of a new PD he was working at. Seems like most PD's let flakes go with letters of recommendation in order to avoid lawsuits,hoping the next PD they apply to will call them for oral verification. Sadly,most small towns have such a hard time finding anybody that they can't be very picky,so they don't call.

Sooner or later people like him kill someone innocent of any crime,and no only does that family suffer,but the PD gets hit with a mega lawsuit once the family lawyers find out he's been let go by other PD's due to emotional or mental problems,and they hid it.

Take a drive in Broward or Dade county.   The cops drive like they are the only ones on the road.

I'll drive in Broward county, but I refuse to ever drive in Dade county again.  Why should I risk my life?

So on the subject of arming teachers, if they have to be ex-military or ex-LE, then I'm guessing the number of armed classroom teachers would actually be pretty small.  It sounds like the upshot would be more armed security or maybe office staff, custodians, etc.

Last time I was in Dade there wasn't a soul who spoke the Kings English.

We were in the heart of Miami 10 years ago; I had to see a specialist at the University of Miami medial center. Regardless of how excellent the surgeon was I decided there was no way in heck I would feel safe staying in that hospital drugged up like a zombie and unable to move for a couple of days.  I haven't been back since and can only imagine what that area is like now.

@LauraTXNM

Seems to me the taxpayers are already paying people to do stuff like this. They are called policemen,and since public schools are public buidlings there should be no conflict charges. Probably not needed so much in rural schools,but in city schools how could it hurt to have a certain number of them per student population assigned there during the day? At a minimum,a armed cop on the premises with other armed cops also on location nearby would make it less likely anyone would try to to "go for the glory." Not much glory in being stopped in your tracks.

I wasnin Dade and went out to the bayfront area for dinner.  On the way back downtown I used Google maps for directions.   It routed me thru the neighborhoods and I didn't catch it until l looked around and saw a very scary area.   I was very happy to be armed and didn't stop at a stop sign.   I figured it would be a good thing to get pulled over.

Many of the neighborhoods in the heart of Miami are scary and yes we were glad we were armed.  No, definitely didn't want to get pulled over.  We unfortunately encountered detours which made the matter even worse, having to go through decrepit parts of town at a snails pace.  Nope, never going back to Little Havana or Little Rwanda.

Back when Miami was in my territory I always made appointments between 8 and 11 am and then got the hell out before the natives woke.  I learned my lesson In the days before Garmans and navigation devices ...I made a wrong turn and ended up in Liberty City.

@Wingnut

I've done worse. I somehow made a whole damn series of wrong turns,and ended up in East St.Louis after midnight on a Sunday morning. I looked like a snowball in a coal bin. Looked like Mogadishu,right down to the fires burning in 55 gallon drums. I still don't know how or why I was even in Missouri,never mind East Saint Louis. It was almost enough to make me quit drinking and doing drugs at the same time.

It could have been worse. i could have discovered I was on a honeymoon.

The 70's were a very confusing time.

It's not a crap shoot to shoot someone trying to kill others.  If you've sent willing to protect children maybe you shouldn't be a teacher.
