Archaeologists at Margate Caves in Kent made the astonishing find during the last day of a dig at the site, which is being reopened as a tourist attraction after closing in 2004.

It has been suggested the caves were once used as ancient torture chambers and a refuge for smugglers, although this has not been proven.

The adult human remains, which could date from as far back as 800 BC, were discovered in a crouched position at the bottom of a chalk pit.
