Paul Ryan Comes Out Against Trump Tariffs
« on: March 05, 2018, 07:00:31 pm »
WASHINGTON — In a rare break with the White House, Republican House Speaker Paul Ryan came out Monday against President Trump’s proposed tariffs on steel and aluminum imports. Ryan’s office warned that the punitive measures could spark a “trade war” that undermines benefits from the GOP’s recent tax overhaul.

“We are extremely worried about the consequences of a trade war and are urging the White House to not advance with this plan,” Ryan spokeswoman AshLee Strong said in a statement. “The new tax reform law has boosted the economy, and we certainly don’t want to jeopardize those gains.”

Article I, Section 8 of the Constitution gives Congress the power to “regulate Commerce with foreign Nations” and “to lay and collect Taxes, Duties, Imposts and Excises.” But in practice, lawmakers have granted the president broad powers to manage trade. It’s unclear whether the political appetite exists in Congress to take any meaningful action.

Not a good potential harbinger for party unity kicking off the 2018 midterm campaign.

As at least two of our esteemed Briefers mentioned days ago, It was all just BS from Trump straight out of 'The Art of The Deal' to get more favorable treatment in the NAFTA Talks. Regardless of whether it works or not, It sure has been enlightening reading some here saying that Tariffs are the best thing since sliced bread.
No government in the 12,000 years of modern mankind history has led its people into anything but the history books with a simple lesson, don't let this happen to you.

Gorsuch hasn’t written an opinion or been part of a major decision yet.  Let’s hold the phone on that.  Besides, he’s a name on a list someone pointed to and said ‘this guy.’  Trump has no idea what his judicial record is really like and left to his own devices, he may have chosen Judge Reinhold for SCOTUS.

He may have defeated Hillary in the general election; but his AG still allows her to get away with murder and all the corruption that surrounds her.  The swamp is alive and well.

His plan to raise the gas tax will put a damper on the tax cuts and proposed tariffs will destroy much of the increase in jobs and wages.

As for Gorsuch, the jury is still out on that one.  As far as I know he has yet to write an opinion/decision.

He is increasing the national debt by trillions of dollars; his promise was to reduce the national debt and balance the budget.

No wall.

No repeal of Bammycare.

AMNESTY.  Perhaps this has been his greatest flaw and once amnesty is granted, we can kiss this country's sovereignty good-bye.  Not many of his accomplishments at that point will really matter.

Another you didn't include...  I give Trump credit for expediting sluggish FDA approvals.  I cheer this heartily.

The point of threatening tariffs is to try to make it more closer to "Free Trade".    You never take any option off of the table.

Free Trade is definitely NOT what we have now.

I suspect many of those who are now saying tariffs are the best thing since sliced bread would be arguing how bad they are had that been Trump's position.  Sadly, it seems to me that many of his supporters just blow wherever the Trumpian wind blows regardless of principle, logic, history, or truth.
I adore facts and data and abhor lies and liars.

Not Hillary.... Rabbit one.

Hillary not in jail as promised.

Quote
22,000 regs gone...... Rabbit two.

Nothing significant that affects American lives.

Quote
Gorsuch....... Rabbit three

What decision has he written so far?  Anything?

Quote
Tax cuts..... Rabbit four

Tariffs...the associated price increases and .50 gas tax wipes that out.

Quote
Germany/other EU paying the 2% on defense........ Rabbit five

Trump didn't do that.  They were already mandated to do that by NATO charter...for the past several decades.  Credit for that...if it goes to anyone for making them pony up...goes to LTG Ben Hodges the just retired Commander of U.S. Army Europe.

Quote
Saudi Reformation...... Rabbit six

What reformation?  Can women vote?  Can they drive?  Are Jews and Christians welcome in Mecca?

Quote
Jerusalem Embassy ... Rabbit seven

Throwaway.

Quote
Isis defeated .... Rabbit eight

No they aren't.  That's a lie.

Quote
Coal coming back ....Rabbit nine

The resurgence is due to the industry making itself more competitive, in much the same manner that the shale oil & gas players made themselves more competitive in response to a collapse in commodities prices.  It's not because of a sudden giant demand for coal or coal fired power plants in the U.S.

Quote
Exporting LNG and oil... Rabbit ten

Almost no effect on the domestic market.

Quote
I am sure I have missed some bunnies... that is the thing with rabbits... they like to explode their population.

Yeah you missed some like DACA...his willingness to double the number of people given amnesty over what the Dems were proposing...profligate spending that expands the deficit.  No wall.  Still stuck with Obamacare.

Trump isn't pulling bunnies out of a hat...but he is pulling something out and waiving it at Americans that's for sure.

Personally I believe that if Trump told you the sun was neon pink and the rest of us were just color blind you'd believe it 100%.

Yes it has.... especially since.... we know from historical fact that tariffs have been a disaster for the American economy every time it has been tried.

While women might start driving in SA, I think that's MBS, not DJT.
