President Donald Trump bemoaned a decision not to investigate Hillary Clinton after the 2016 presidential election, decrying a "rigged system" that still doesn't have the "right people" in place to fix it, during a freewheeling speech to Republican donors in Florida on Saturday.

In the closed-door remarks, a recording of which was obtained by CNN, Trump also praised China's President Xi Jinping for recently consolidating power and extending his potential tenure, musing he wouldn't mind making such a maneuver himself.

"He's now president for life. President for life. No, he's great," Trump said. "And look, he was able to do that. I think it's great. Maybe we'll have to give that a shot some day."

"Confiscation first.  Due process later"

I'd say Trump was already making that day come a whole lot sooner.

And here everyone was afraid Hildabeast would be the one to play around with dictatorship ideas.
Fart for freedom, fart for liberty and fart proudly.  - Benjamin Franklin

...Obsta principiis—Nip the shoots of arbitrary power in the bud, is the only maxim which can ever preserve the liberties of any people. When the people give way, their deceivers, betrayers and destroyers press upon them so fast that there is no resisting afterwards. The nature of the encroachment upon [the] American constitution is such, as to grow every day more and more encroaching. Like a cancer, it eats faster and faster every hour." - John Adams, February 6, 1775

We did have a shot at it for a large part of the nation’s history.  Thing is, presidents respected the office, tradition, and precedent set by Washington.  Then, FDR came along and threw it out the window.  After that, the nation saw the wisdom and necessity to pass the 22nd Amendment.

Methinks.
Those who profess to favor freedom, and yet deprecate agitation, are men who want crops without plowing up the ground, they want rain without thunder and lightning, they want the ocean without the awful roar of its many waters.

I like the 22nd Amendment. Sad it is needed, but I can see why.

Yes, but for every Augustus and Hadrian, there’s an Elagabalus or Caligula waiting in the wings.

Liberty as intended to be preserved for us, cannot exist under a monarch or a dictatorship in any capacity whatsoever.

I’m not for the idea at all.  My point is, you have to deal with the potentially horrible in that situation.  We have horrible presidents, but we can vote them out or see them go after two terms.  Under the Roman system, your only recourse is assassination or coup.

@INVAR

That is what Trump wants, full dictatorship, dictating to everyone what they can and cannot do, give him "credit" for their being alive, be dictator for life, and he has no idea why it would be wrong.  That is the dangerous part, he doesn't know--

Wasn't that the same day China outlawed the letter 'N'?

'Maybe we'll give that a shot some day'

It’s important we hear this tape of Trump to get a sense of his tone - whether it was a bad joke or if he was serious.

It’s an open question for me because this isn’t the first time he’s praised totalitarians.

Even the Chinese government specifically:
