Five ways Trump broke with the GOP on guns

Challenging the leaders of his own party, President Trump on Wednesday urged Congress to adopt of host of gun restrictions that have long been anathema to Republicans on Capitol Hill.
In an extraordinary televised meeting with lawmakers of both parties at the White House, Trump called for quick action on expanding background checks, increasing the gun-buying age and empowering law enforcers to confiscate firearms from potentially unstable people — even without a court’s approval.
All of those proposals are fervently opposed by the National Rifle Association (NRA) and most Republicans in Congress — and Trump suggested the relationship between those two groups is much of the problem.
“Some of you people are petrified of the NRA,†he said. “You can’t be petrified.â€
