Rand Paul Stands Tall

Jeff Crouere     |     Posted: Feb 10, 2018 12:01 AM

Thank God for U.S. Senator Rand Paul (R-KY). At least there is one politician in the United States Senate who is concerned about deficit spending. On Thursdaynight, he led a lonely crusade against a two-year $400 billion spending bill that balloons the budget and massively increases the federal debt by over $1 trillion.

Paul continued the fight for hours, forcing a very brief government shutdown, and providing much needed attention to the spending habits of our federal government. On the Senate floor, Paul, revealed the real problem was “Republicans hand-in-hand with Democrats offering us trillion-dollar deficits.” He said that the goal of the protest was for “people to feel uncomfortable" supporting such a huge spending bill.

Sadly, the vast majority of Senate Republicans wanted Paul to stop speaking. They did not like his focus on their embarrassing spending habits. The Senator scolded his colleagues by claiming, "When the Democrats are in power, Republicans appear to be the conservative party, but when Republicans are in power, it seems there is no conservative party. The hypocrisy hangs in the air and chokes anyone with a sense of decency or intellectual honesty."

Senator Paul implored his colleagues to maintain the current budget caps and not support a “700-page bill that no one has read, that was printed atmidnight.” Instead the Senate overwhelmingly passed the legislative package by a vote of 78-21 at1:30 a.m. ET. Hours later, the House passed it by a vote of 240-186.

Joining Paul in opposing the deal were some conservatives such as House Freedom Caucus Chairman, Representative Mark Meadows (R-NC), who said the legislation “expands government spending well beyond the caps, by almost 15%.” Meadows noted that as a candidate he promised his North Carolina constituents to “work to cut government spending,” not support wasteful government spending. In the understatement of the year, Meadows claimed that “We have to do better.”

This horrible deal was strongly supported by House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-WI) and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY). While the President signed the bill, he did not express the same enthusiasm for the increased spending as the congressional leaders. Trump only supported the package because it included $165 billion in additional military spending that is undoubtedly needed.

Otherwise, he realized the problems with the deal. The President tweeted that “we were forced to increase spending on things we do not like or want.” He said it included “much waste” to secure needed votes from congressional Democrats. In exchange for the increase in military spending, Congress agreed to an additional $131 billion in domestic spending.

As a result of this bill, the budget caps instituted in 2011 are history and there will be $300 billion in new military and domestic spending and $100 billion in “emergency” spending to provide relief to victims of recent hurricanes and natural disasters.

Even though there is a Republican President and Republican leadership in both houses of Congress, there has been no change in the “tax and spend” policies in our nation’s capital. This will undoubtedly anger many conservative voters throughout the nation who worked tirelessly to give Republicans control of the House in 2010 and the Senate in 2014.

Republicans were not put in charge of Congress to keep the same policies in place. The GOP was given the reigns of leadership to institute needed reforms and make critical changes to the “politics as usual” system that created so many problems in our country. Sadly, the “deep state” forces within the bureaucracy make any sort of real change especially difficult, if not impossible.

~snip~

Congratulations to Senator Paul, Congressman Meadows and the very few conservatives who stood tall and voted against this bill. Their valiant effort highlighted the hypocrisy of GOP congressional leaders who campaign as conservatives but govern as liberals. If this continues in the months ahead, Republicans can kiss control of Congress goodbye.

Rand Paul is 100% correct on this.  I am sick of giving the Democrats everything year after year without a fight.  Why in the hell do Republicans allow automatic increases in all federal spending year after year?
If a political party does not have its foundation in the determination to advance a cause that is right and that is moral, then it is not a political party; it is merely a conspiracy to seize power.

-Dwight Eisenhower-

"The [U.S.] Constitution is a limitation on the government, not on private individuals ... it does not prescribe the conduct of private individuals, only the conduct of the government ... it is not a charter for government power, but a charter of the citizen's protection against the government."

-Ayn Rand-

Rand Paul stands his convictions.  When (GOP and Dem) Senators were turning on Paul for delaying the vote past their bedtimes Mike Lee took to the floor to defend Paul's right to do this.  Lee also voted "no" along with Paul.

Good for both of them.

That's right. Cruz just went down 50% in my view with a single vote.

Agree.  We are placing this debt on the backs of our children.
AG William Barr: "I'm recused from that matter because one of the law firms that represented Epstein long ago was a firm that I subsequently joined for a period of time."

Alexander Acosta Labor Secretary resigned under pressure concerning his "sweetheart deal" with Jeffrey Epstein.  He was under consideration for AG after Sessions was removed, but was forced to resign instead.

They need a committee to start working on the next budget agreement after the midterm winners are seated .... January 1, 2019.  I think the President should announce this at his next SOTU.

We cannot pass another unread 700 page budget bill in 48 hours.

Far too few in DC who have principles much less stand up for them.
I adore facts and data and abhor lies and liars.

That's right. Cruz just went down 50% in my view with a single vote.

But my home state's Republican senator surprisingly voted against.  I never thought much of Toomey, but he has improved in my estimation.

Just so he doesn't now do something stupid like that "common sense gun control legislation" he and Joe Manchin came up with several years ago.

Before that, they need to learn just what a budget is and how to prepare it.  We haven't had a budget in generations.  What we get are spending plans.

Well, to be fair, our Democrat Tester voted against it too - Didn't change my mind about him one iota.
But our Daines, a Republican, voted for it, and lost my vote from now on. And I will call him on Monday and tell him so.

I am represented by sonsabiches.

Cruz already has one demerit on government shutdown, no matter what any of us think and we may like that,  a lot of people don't like it, meaning a number of persons in his constituency.  That's what this is about.

Rand stands tall; and in Kentucky.

Cruz has had fairly good approval ratings in Texas but it's still quite a different situation from Kentucky where Rand can do this.

I'm disappointed in Senator Cotton and others as well.

Lankford out of OK, I saw another article on him. He was a "nay", he might be another one to watch too. There's Sen. Jeff Flake as a nay too and even NY's D-Senator Gillibrand as a "nay". I'd like to hear some expert analysis of this.

Sen. Cruz disappointed even me with this Vote. I understand that Beto would have beat him up for denying FEMA funds to Harvey Victims in the upcoming election, but DAMN, Statewide Office in TEXAS is still solid RED, just ask abortion Barbie.
No government in the 12,000 years of modern mankind history has led its people into anything but the history books with a simple lesson, don't let this happen to you.

Right, there is always next year to rehash what you didn't do this year.

Yes.

And Grassley voted No, with Paul.

I still think he's working in private with Trump on the explosion of Dem sexual harassment exposes, to sink the Rats and get Trump's Judges approved.
My 'Viking Hunter' High Adventure Alternate History Series is FREE, ALL 3 volumes, at most ebook retailers including Ibooks, Barnes and Noble, Kobo, and more.

In Vol 2 the weapons come out in a winner take all war on two fronts.

Vol 3 opens with the rigged murder trial of the villain in a Viking Court under Viking law to set the stage for the hero's own murder trial.

I soured on Ted Cruz when he bent his knee to Trump.  I can understand why he did so, just as I understand why he voted for this spending spree, but it doesn't make his actions any more palatable.  Finally hit home with me that Cruz is just another politician.  Sooner or later, Rand Paul and the others who voted against the spending spree  will do something to bring us all back to reality.   In DC, principles are so easily compromised.
