The U.S. Supreme Court said Monday it would not intervene in the fight over Mississippi's controversial law allowing denial of service to same-sex couples on religious grounds, but opponents of the law vowed the fight is not over.

The court did not comment on its reasons for allowing to stand an appeals court ruling that permitted the law to go into effect.

Proponents of the law, which has the backing of Gov. Phil Bryant, a Republican, say it is a way to protect citizens from violating their religious beliefs if serving LGBT customers would do so. The law, known as House Bill 1523, also allows county clerks to refuse to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples.

Despite the Monday decision, the American Civil Liberties Union issued a statement Monday saying it would push forward with a carefully targeted case involving a specific couple. A federal judge has allowed those challenging the law to try to find couples who have been denied services....
