The Cardinals had the class and grace to trade Stephen Piscotty to the Athletics last December so he could play close to his mother, who was diagnosed with ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease) last May. Sunday night, the lady lost her battle . . .

Gretchen Piscotty, mother of Athletics' Stephen Piscotty, dies at 55

. . . and, no matter his struggles on the mound, Yu Darvish of the Cubs opened his heart and his checkbook to Piscotty and his mother . . .

Yu Darvish donates $10,000 to ALS research in memory of Stephen Piscotty's mom

RIP Mrs. Piscotty . . . and Mr. Darvish, you, sir, have class.

Seventeen Techniques for Truth Suppression

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.

She's had some rough times.....

She and Christopher Reeve -- both gone way too soon.

I understand Ms. Kidder was manic-depressive.  I worked for an attorney who, after years of misdiagnosis and resulting poor, ineffective treatment, was finally correctly diagnosed   Last I heard he was part of an ongoing university study into manic-depression in an effort to develop better treatment.  He was doing much better last time I saw him.

Too bad Ms. Kidder was in such bad straits for all those years.  I hope she has peace now.

It sure is.  Especially if people don't take their meds.

It sure is.  Especially if people don't take their meds.

But... isn't it kind of like a Catch-22?   Like a diabetic needing a shot of insulin, they get in a state where they don't or won't take their meds.... cause it's already too late and they're having a reaction.  I know.... I used to give a gf her insulin shot at work.  Had to try to force her a couple of times because she argued that she didn't need it.  She did.

My guy friend in Houston was involved with a woman for several years that was bi-polar and her eventual issue was she wouldn't take her meds.  It was up to him to force her and that led to chaos.  It didn't last, needless to say.  She finally moved back to Louisiana and became her family's problem again.

Yes.  This often occurs with people with schizophrenia, too.  Often, the meds are effective...so the person then thinks he doesn't need them.

But even with medication, this condition can be a hell.  I feel for her, despite how flaming liberal she was, and concur with others that I hope she's found peace.

A former pastor of ours had a bipolar daughter who had that issue with her meds.  She took them and felt fine and then didn't take them and totally lost it, and ended up in the psych ward at the hospital repeatedly.

Tough disease.....

It depends on so many factors. Are they more Manic or more depressed. Are they fast or slow cycling, how severe are they. And a lot of it depends on the quality of your doctor and your relationship with them. My wife is Bi-polar Manic. She went undiagnosed for about 5 years. They thought it was Central Nervous system Lyme's disease. When she finally was diagnosed they had her a dosage that was way to strong. She was like a Zombie. She would sleep 12 hours a day, could not initiate a conversation, or do anything beyond the most rudimentary of tasks. Finally I stepped in and met with her Doctor. I wrote a letter to him explaining the problems so he would have a copy in writing. I told my wife that there  would be one of three results. 1) a reduction / change in her meds. 2) a second opinion 3) a different doctor. He decreased her dosage and left the practice shortly after that. She went through 2-3 temporary doctors until they found a permanent one for her. There have been some rough patches, but she does have a handle on it. I should add that she works at a Psychiatric hospital and sees what happens when they don't take their meds. She is bound to control this and not let it control her.

The problem is that the meds themselves are terrible. The side effects can be as bad as the disease you are trying to cure. They rob you of youur personality. , your soul.  They can cause ur liver and/or kidney to. Fail. Tardive dyskinesia is fun too,

Catatonic brings ECT.. it might take years to find the right med cocktail

Like I said I wouldn't wish this on my worst enemy.

He had me from boyhood, his years with New York when it was the Sunday magazine offering of the dying New York Herald-Tribune and from his first anthology, The Kandy Kolored Tangerine Flake Streamline Baby. (The original headline on the title article, first published in Esquire: "There Goes (Varoom! Varoom!) That Kandy-Kolored (Thphhhhhh!) Tangerine-Flake Streamline Baby (Rahghhh!) Around the Bend (Brummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm) . . . . . ."; the article was about George Barris and the 1960s car customisers.) Few were so deft at harpooning the pretenses creeping into culture the way he did in such work as The Pump House Gang, The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test, Radical Chic and Mau-Mauing the Flak Catchers, The Painted Word, and From Bauhaus to Our House.

RIP Mr. Wolfe. Your books still occupy some of the most reachable space on my shelves.
