@Quix It was readily apparent from the results that the intent of destabilization of stable, if not particularly lovable nations in North Africa was to facilitate regime change leading to more radical Islamic states. I think the objection to Syrian involvement (then, and now) is that, as with the others who were successfully deposed, you had a strong, duly emplaced ruler who was a strongman, who kept the various religious and political factions in line and gave their nation stability, even if their methods were repressive.
Egypt's stability reaped economic benefits through tourism and trade, Libya, had given up its WMDs when Saddam was ousted, but had backed off its blatant terrorism to a large degree (not that it wasn't still sympathetic). Syria, a similar mess of conflicting interests, was held together with an iron hand on the reins. It was a bridge too far for Americans, despite the brutality there, an internal matter until the push for intervention.
Out of chaos comes opportunity, and while we don't KNOW the instigators there, it is likely that the Obama Administration and Clinton as SofS had a hand, with elements of the CIA and other agencies. It was unlikely that more reasonable leaders for those states would be found on the Obamas dance card, but there were plenty of more radical Muslim candidates to step in. With Iraq destabilized by withdrawing American Troops, there was an opportunity to build an Islamic super state from the ashes, using American (top shelf, globally) materiel, tanks, vehicles, and weapons. I have little doubt this was the legacy Barry Soetoro's handlers intended, or that Clinton was involved in the channeling of weapons and fighters to what became ISIS for fun and mainly profit, leading, among other things to the incident involving Ambassador Stevens in Benghazi. By their fruits shall ye know them.
The push to establish that caliphate could have left America on the ropes economically and energy wise, had the US Oil Patch not responded by making huge technological and production increases in spite of the Obama Administration.
So much was done which either had the potential to hurt America, or did so, that the ability to argue anything but malice was virtually gone.
