Russia Banned From The 2018 Winter Olympics In PyeongChang
« on: December 05, 2017, 06:47:07 pm »
After meeting in Lausanne, Switzerland on Tuesday, a 14-person International Olympic Committee panel announced it has banned Russia from the 2018 Winter Olympics in PyeongChang. The panel had been mulling a confidential IOC report that detailed Russia’s official doping program during the 2014 Sochi Olympics, and the extensive cover-up.

This ban was a long time coming, and certainly deserved. The McLaren Report, released in two parts by the World Anti-Doping Agency in July and December 2016, detailed the doping and subsequent cover-up by the Russian state. It started as far back as 2011 and involves at least the 2012 Olympics in London and the 2014 Olympics in Sochi, though the IOC panel was only asked to rule on the doping that occurred during the 2014 Olympics. Over 1,000 athletes were involved.

Likely Russia will adopt a new country meme such as 'Russia-Ukraine since it absorbed that counry through a military victory, so it will compete anyway.

Vlad ain't gonna be happy bout this.
Character still matters.  It always matters.

I wear a mask as an exercise in liberty and love for others.  To see it as an infringement of liberty is to entirely miss the point.  Be kind.

Russia banned from 2018 Winter Olympics over doping
By John Bowden - 12/05/17 01:49 PM EST

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has banned Russia from competing in the 2018 Winter Olympic Games in Pyeongchang, South Korea, in retaliation for a state-backed doping program the committee says Russia has run in recent years.

The IOC announced that Russia's flag will not be flown at next year's games and the country's anthem will not be played during the opening ceremony. The decision also bars the country's government officials from attending the events, and states that any Russian athletes who get special permission to compete will wear a neutral uniform. Any medals won will not be counted towards Russia's medal count.

...  Now the sports world will wait to see how Russia responds. Some Russian officials have threatened to boycott if the I.O.C. delivered such a severe punishment.

President Vladimir V. Putin seemed to be predicting a boycott of the Pyeongchang Games, since his foreign policy in recent years has been based on the premise that he has rescued Russia from the humiliation inflicted on it by the West after the collapse of the Soviet Union. ...

In barring Russia’s team, Olympic officials left the door open for some Russian athletes. Those with histories of rigorous drug testing may petition for permission to compete in neutral uniforms.  ...

Not to worry. The IOC takes bribes. This will all be smoothed over shortly.
