GOP Rep. Barton announces retirement after more lewd messages surface
Fox News, Nov 30, 2017, Alex Pappas

A Texas Republican congressman said Thursday he will not seek re-election to Congress after a nude photo and lewd text messages between him and multiple women surfaced.

"I am announcing today that I will not seek reelection in 2018,” Rep. Joe Barton said in a Thursday statement. “To the people of the 6th District, thank you for your support and friendship."

Before the messages were made public, Barton had said he planned to run for an 18th term to the House.

If ever there is an icon for "true conservative," he would be high on the list.

So the lesson that is reinforced for me, is these people are above all else, politicians.

They play-act a very great deal, about high morals. No pedestals deserved.

I always liked Joe, but he's made himself both ridiculous and irrelevant.  And 17 terms is enough for anybody.

So his "retirement" won't actually mean anything until, what, January 2019?

I'm sad to see Joe's career end this way. He was a good man when I helped him get elected to his first term in congress.  Goes to show that even good people are not immune to Potomac fever!

So, Potomac fever must be like tequila.  It makes you take your clothes off and be stupid?

In some instances yes.  In others it causes other forms of stupid behavior.  I don't think any form is off the table.

There is still some difference between Republicans and Democrats.  You don't see Franken or Conyers pledging to retire for much worse stuff.

Joe should resign. Were he an employee he'd be fired.

I'm still reeling about Joe Barton doing this.  Do men get more stupid the older they get?  And how could he be naive enough after all those years in government to think the pictures and texts would remain private??

Far, far more powerful than tequila.
