I think we need to take Al at his word. He should run for re-election in 2020 so he can champion women's causes in the future. He posted a sincere apology by saying: “I respect women. I don’t respect men who don’t. And the fact that my own actions have given people a good reason to doubt that makes me feel ashamed." But I want to say something else, too. Over the last few months, all of us — including and especially men who respect women — have been forced to take a good, hard look at our own actions and think (perhaps, shamefully, for the first time) about how those actions have affected women.

U.S. Sen. Al Franken, a Democrat who has positioned himself as a champion of women’s issues, says he feels “disgusted with myself” over a photograph of him grinning at the camera while his hands are over the breasts of a sleeping woman in 2006.
The woman, Leeann Tweeden, a former model and radio host, came forward Thursday with the photo and allegations that Franken kissed her without her consent during rehearsals of a skit for soldiers during a USO tour overseas.
Late Thursday morning, Franken issued a statement that included numerous apologies, and said he’d welcome a Senate Ethics investigation of his own actions.
