Gov. Chris Christie’s wife, Mary Pat Christie, was swept up in a crackdown on distracted drivers ordered by his attorney general earlier this year, it was reported Thursday.
New Jersey’s first lady was pulled over shortly before 11 a.m. April 10 for holding her cellphone in her hand while driving a white 2016 Chevy Suburban, NJ.com reported.
Officer Timothy Richard of the Bernardsville Police Department, who was assigned to a detail enforcing the hands-free cellphone law, did not recognize Christie and she didn’t let him know she was married to the governor, the report said, citing dashcam video of the stop.
A spokesman for Gov. Christie called it a “non-story.”
“We’re not offering anything more on it,” said Brian Murray.
Mary Pat Christie was among the 15,282 people who got tickets for cellphone use while driving during the crackdown between April 1 and April 21, the report said.
She made a court appearance in May, pleaded guilty and paid a $250 fine, the report said.
New Jersey Attorney General Christopher Porrino received funds from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to launch a campaign against distracted driving after traffic fatalities jumped 8 percent in 2016, the report said.
