A hole as large as Lake Superior or the state of Maine has opened up in Antarctica, and scientists aren't sure why it's there. The gigantic, mysterious hole "is quite remarkable," atmospheric physicist Kent Moore, a professor at the University of Toronto's Mississauga campus, told me over the phone. "It looks like you just punched a hole in the ice."

Areas of open water surrounded by sea ice, such as this one, are known as polynias. They form in coastal regions of Antarctica, Moore told me. What's strange here, though, is that this polynia is "deep in the ice pack," he said, and must have formed through other processes that aren't understood. "This is hundreds of kilometres from the ice edge. If we didn't have a satellite, we wouldn't know it was there." (It measured 80,000 k㎡ at its peak.)

As far as I'm aware they're not trying to say this is global warming right now because they don't understand how this happened. I'm not really interested in debating the qualifications of the many scientists currently trying to figure this out.

It seems a no-brainer to me that, since there are underwater volcanos under the Antarctic ice shelf.... and since they know that there are underwater volcanos under the Antarctic ice shelf....

that they might suspect that could be a cause.  But instead, they have "no clue"...lol.  It's hilarious... really.  Scientists always have a theory.... but in this case, nada.  Makes me wonder...

I think you mean they always have a hypothesis. I mean, you should at least get your terminology right when you're criticizing people on a subject they've dedicated their lives to. I'm sure they have some, but obviously nothing concrete enough for them to talk about with confidence. An underwater volcano is everybody's first guess. Maybe this isn't a "no brainer" situation. It could be a volcano because honestly I don't know enough to say one way or the other; maybe they will uncover that to be the case in the days/weeks to come, but we'll have to see. What's interesting to me is the scientist suggesting it must have formed through a process that is currently not understood. If he would say that with such confidence it makes me think that maybe for whatever reason he's pretty sure it isn't a volcano. I have no idea what magnitude of reaction a volcanic eruption would have had underneath the Arctic ice, but maybe he understands more than us and thinks it's something else.

Yep.  Global Warming caused a bunch of ice to melt, leaving behind a lot of water.  Water is very heavy, and the ground couldn't support it.  At least, that's the theory, we're waiting on Hank Johnson to confirm.

Anyway! We all know that it is the aliens. I have been taught since I was 10 years old that Antarctica is where the aliens have their secret base. I'm guessing something happened with them. Some kind of catastrophe has melted the ice. Chernobyl style. The best bet is to let them deal with it unless they ask for our help. I'll go and work with them if they do.


Maybe they can get a message off to home and their own kind will come to help them. For now, we should stay out of it a let them fix it. We will see in a few weeks if they need our help.
