Russian general killed in IS shelling in Syria
A Russian general was fatally wounded while assisting Syrian troops in an operation to recapture the province of Deir el-Zour. Russian media blamed his death on mortar shelling by the "Islamic State" militant group.
Russia's Defense Ministry confirmed the death of one of its generals on Sunday who it said was serving as an adviser to Syrian government troops.
Lt. Gen. Valery Asapov was killed when a shell, fired by the so-called "Islamic State" (IS) armed group, exploded at a command post for Syrian forces close to Deir el-Zour city in the east, the ministry was cited by local media as saying.
