San Francisco, Oakland sue major oil companies over rising seas

The cities of San Francisco and Oakland are suing some of the world’s largest oil companies over climate change, joining an emerging legal effort to hold the fossil fuel industry accountable for the damages wrought by rising seas.

The suits, filed separately Tuesday in Superior Court in San Francisco and Alameda County, claim that a slate of oil, gas and coal producers not only caused the heat-trapping gases that drove sea-level rise but knowingly did so, a challenge akin to litigation against big tobacco companies in the 1990s.

What a laugh.  Why don't they sue some volcanoes and the sun while they are at it.  They are even more responsible.

Hey, Chevron:  You are the last big oil company still HQd in that hellhole called California.  When are you planning on leaving?

The 4th biggest US oil company Occidental left in 2014 after being there for 94 years.  Texas welcomes oil folks, not suing them.

How in the world are they going to demonstrate practical effect?

Providing the judge requires they prove loss and doesn't go straight to the penalty phase.

I browsed through the article, but didn't see any actual number representing how much higher the mean sea level in San Francisco Bay has risen in the past fifty years.

Before one can be "held accountable for damages", there must first BE "damages", I would think.

So... how much higher have the waters of San Francisco Bay risen... in reality?
