Seattle Mayor Ed Murray resigns after latest child sex-abuse allegation

Seattle Mayor Ed Murray announced his resignation Tuesday, hours after new sexual abuse allegations surfaced against the embattled politician.

Murray, a Democrat and the city's first openly gay mayor, said he was resigning effective 5 p.m. Wednesday so the scandal would no longer overshadow his office.

The mayor's announcement comes after his cousin gave an interview with the Seattle Times alleging abuse, the latest in a series of similar accusations. The cousin is the fifth person to publicly accuse Murray of child sexual abuse since a lawsuit was filed against him in April.

Murray denied the allegations, as he has in the past. Previously, he called them part of a political effort to stymy his progressive agenda and support for LGBTQ and immigrant rights.

"While the allegations against me are not true, it is important that my personal issues do not affect the ability of our city government to conduct the public's business," he said in a statement.

"To the people of this special city and to my dedicated staff, I am sorry for this painful situation."

Council President Bruce Harrell will become mayor upon Murray's resignation. Harrell has five days to decide to hold the position for the remainder of Murray's term, which ends in December.

Murray and the mayor before him Greg Nickels has ruined what once was a jewel as big cities go.  The homeless problem grew so bad under them that tents have popped up on any vacant spot that can be found, including City Hall property. Its embarrassing to show visitors the city and try to explain away all the bums, heroin addicts, and crazy people that have taken over, and coddled by the City Leaders and the media.

Details for the most part have not been shared, but the first to come forward was a man who when a boy recovering from drug abuse was paid money by Murray for Sex. The latest allegation was from a younger cousin who at 13 said he was repeatedly sexually abused by Murray.  Several other men (then boys) have also come forward.

Rantz: Kshama Sawant could become Seattle Mayor in 5 days

Are you ready for this? It’s possible that Seattle City Councilmember Kshama Sawant will become mayor of Seattle until the race between Jenny Durkan and Cary Moon is decided. Moreover, People’s Party mayoral candidate Nikkita Oliver could become a council member.

Now that Murray is set to resign Wednesday at 5 p.m., Council President Bruce Harrell becomes interim mayor. He has five days to decide if he wants to keep the post, which, according to the City Attorney’s office, means he would have to vacate his council seat. He’s not indicated, as of yet, a willingness to do that. In fact, it seems like he won’t.

So what happens if Harrell says no? The council will choose another one of its members to serve as mayor until the election.

Oh, hello, Councilmember Sawant. She could be installed as mayor in days. She’s already been a mover and shaker on the council and is more responsible than Murray — or any of the other council — in the successful policy pushes on the minimum wage and secure scheduling. She’s shown that she can lead in a city where ideology seems to matter most.   ... Full story at KTTH
