While evacuations are mandatory, Gimenez said police will not be going door-to-door to check on residents who refuse to leave their homes.
All county officers will be closed Thursday and Friday.
Gimenez urged all visitors to cut their vacations in South Florida short and make plans to leave the area ahead of the storm.
