Woman hit with felony charges for toppling Confederate statue

A woman who took part in the toppling of a Confederate statue in Durham, NC, has been arrested and slapped with felony charges, cops said Tuesday.

Takiya Thompson, 22, has been charged with disorderly conduct by injury to a statue, damage to real property, participation in a riot with property damage in excess of $1,500 — and inciting others to riot where there is property damage in excess of $1,500, according to the Durham County Sheriff’s Office.

The last two offenses are Class H and Class F felonies, carrying a sentence of up to 25 months and 41 months behind bars, respectively.

Deputies took Thompson, a member of the far-left Workers World Party and a student at N.C. Central University, into custody Tuesday shortly after she appeared at a press conference with other protesters.

It looks like the vast majority of them were erected between 1900 and 1930 so I'm wondering what the driving force was that didn't exist prior.

Monuments like this, commemorated the dead of the Civil War. To act destructively like this is nauseating.

Stalin was a bad hombre who killed many people but that doesn't mean members of the Red Army did not act valiantly in defeating the Nazis.  This would be like destroying a memorial for the war dead of the Soviet army.

They began putting up monuments about the time Civil War veterans started dying away. They also became popular at the 100th anniversary.

It was the progeny of the soldiers that erected the monuments. They didn't experience the horror of the war. Plus most common soldiers are too self effacing to erect monuments in their own honor.

For now. Fascists who deface the Lincoln Memorial wouldn't be averse to tearing down a statue of anyone, I should think.

If Democrats seeking the removal of historical memorials tied to racist history are serious, they should be tripping over one another to get in front of a camera and call for the removal of memorials and namesakes to Presidents Andrew Johnson, Woodrow Wilson, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, Lyndon Baines Johnson, and Sen. Robert C Byrd.

These five men had two things in common–all had a penchant for racism to one degree or another, and all were Democrats.

Some of the memorials to them are monuments, some are groves, others are highways, bridges, colleges, and even cemeteries. Of course, the cemeteries ought not be disturbed, but they should be renamed if the Democrats are serious about rooting out the vestiges of racism.  ...

Exactly. Even the statue of Lenin in Seattle should not be vandalized. Destruction of someone else's property - including statues in public locations - is a crime, period.

A Chicago pastor has asked the Emanuel administration to remove the names of two presidents who owned slaves from parks on the South Side, saying the city should not honor slave owners in black communities.

The pastor also said President Andrew Jackson’s name should be removed from nearby Jackson Park, because he also was a slave owner. He said he’s not necessarily asking the city rename the parks altogether. He suggested Washington Park could be named after former Mayor Harold Washington, and Jackson Park could be named after civil rights leader Rev. Jesse Jackson or singer Michael Jackson.
