Poll: Majority of Republicans Would Favor Postponing 2020 Elections if Trump Proposed It

By J. Cal Davenport  |  August 10, 2017, 03:30pm  |  @J_Cal_Davenport.

On Sunday, Venezuela held what can only be described as a mock election to choose constituents for an assembly to revise the country’s constitution, though no one other than the president, Nicholas Maduro, wants said constitution revised. Predictably, the regime has touted massive turnout, despite a widespread boycott from both the right and left, while the opposition claims that turnout was only 12 percent.

The free world regularly derides the faux-democracies of socialist regimes like Maduro, in which votes are manipulated and elections are canceled due to “emergencies.” Who knew that the party of constitutionally-limited government contained so many people who would willingly give up the constitutionally-mandated check of regular elections?

The Washington Post just released the results of a poll conducted in mid-June of over 1,300 Americans balanced to match the population. The shocking result is that 52 percent of Republicans would support postponing the 2020 election if Trump proposed it in order to be sure that only eligible citizens could vote, and 56 percent said they would do so if both Trump and Republicans in Congress did.

It wasn't that terribly long ago when they were outraged when people like Tom Friedman and Bev  Perdue suggested postponing or cancelling elections when BHO was president

Edit: Assuming this poll is accurate

I have little interest in streamlining government or in making it more efficient, for I mean to reduce its size. I do not undertake to promote welfare, for I propose to extend freedom. My aim is not to pass laws, but to repeal them.

A huge majority of Republicans who are rabid Trump supporters are absolutely no different than the Communist/Leftist tyrants they were busy scaring everyone would take over and do tyranny if Trump weren't elected.

They are exactly that whom they said they oppose if this poll is correct.

They just follow a different political messiah with an 'R' after his name.

But they are no different than those who treated Obama and Hillary with the same zeal and utter disregard for the rule of law.

I have zero faith in ANY polls anymore and that would never happen.  And there is no evidence whatever that Trump would propose such a thing.

Yep, Invar chomped on it immediately.  Which was ridiculous in view of the fact that it is all wild speculation.

No one said he did propose such a thing.

Then again Trump himself never asserted he should act as a dictator, it was his supporters on various fora and social groups that were publicly exclaiming that Trump should simply make decrees.

We're discussing the zeitgeist that infects mob movements from both the rabid Left AND the Populist side of the aisle.

I knew I shouldn't have taken you off of ignore.  You cannot wait for Trump to actually do something to criticize him for what you think he will do.

Your attitude is no credit to any solution whatever because you've entered a realm that doesn't exist ... maybe in a widening gyre.  And, yeah, Yeats died.

I got flack for giving Trump a thumbs up when he announced he was pulling us out of the Paris Accords and when he Tweeted that the GOP should just pass a simple repeal ObamaCare bill - because you see, I was not on the Trump train from the beginning and they opined they do not need my affirmations or thumbs up of their dear leader.

And if my opinions bother you so much - put me back on ignore.  Ask me if I care.

Your attitude is no credit to any solution whatever ...

Look lady, YOUR attitude or MY attitude or anyone's else's attitude for that matter towards Trump MEANS JACK SHIT towards crediting any "solution" to the myriad and infinitesimal problems we are plagued with that you assume Trump is going to fix if only we channeled enough positive energy his way.

If you want to go light candles and hum happy thoughts while singing Kumbayah with fellow Republicans in hopes the good vibes miraculously fix our decline into oblivion, be my guest and knock yourself out.  Has about the same impact venting happy thoughts towards Trump from a keyboard has.

My problem is that you never say anything positive or advance any positive solutions.  If not Republicans, who?

A third party is just a dream right now and your negative thoughts have no more positive effect on what you call our decline into oblivion than those strange people you are imagining who are singing Kumbayah.  I have not seen any trace of those people.  I see people who view everything that happens through a prism of hate for Trump and find them more prevalent here than those who think Trump is the second coming.

I certainly don't think that Trump is the second coming but I think we need to concentrate on electing more conservatives to the House and Senate.

My problem is that you never say anything positive or advance any positive solutions.

You and a few others here only want to hear political solutions to moral and foundational problems.  You are not interested in the root cause of where we find ourselves, only in the temporary relief of the symptoms.

You put your faith and trust in men and their institutions - and it is from there you are wanting to hear positive "solutions".

Sorry, but that is not where any solutions are going to be found.  Just the opposite.

If not Republicans, who?

Conservatives.

A third party is just a dream right now

So was the idea of Independence in the 1750's and 60's.

and your negative thoughts have no more positive effect on what you call our decline into oblivion than those strange people you are imagining who are singing Kumbayah.

Just keep screaming for me to stop with the negative waves Moriarty.  Maybe do a hookah to make up for my negative waves intruding on your happy thoughts.

I see people who view everything that happens through a prism of hate for Trump and find them more prevalent here than those who think Trump is the second coming.

Go to TOS then, and have a nice happy, healthy dose of Trump Groupthink without any shred of doubt or risk any exposure to Trump hate or criticism.

I certainly don't think that Trump is the second coming but I think we need to concentrate on electing more conservatives to the House and Senate.

Knock yourself out trying to do that from within the Plantation.

I'm done practicing insanity.

@Emjay

I also see no evidence that Trump would propose anything. Nor is it going to happen

As to the statement of "I have zero faith in any polls anymore." Yes, polls are faulty, and we know all about how accurate the polls were last year in predicting the winner of the election. But we didn't know those polls were wrong until election night. I will operate under the assumption this poll is accurate.

This is actually worse than the Democrats during Clinton and Obama.  They just wanted the two to run for a third term (despite it being against the 22nd Amendment).

This... this is actually suspending elections in total.  Outright dictatorship a la the Palestinian Authority.

Yes, but the Palestinian Authority is live, not history.

Their last election was in 2005.

Too many times I've seen Trumpers laughing off totalitarian "suggestions" from Trump as jokes only to end up seeking to justify them later on.
During the campaign Trump said something about wanting to open up the libel laws to prosecute media and they all laughed at his great joke. Now they talk about prosecuting reporters for leaking national secrets that are really just embarrassing leaks from a chaotic white house.

To me the whole going after leakers is nothing more than show.  I remember in how we all freaked out when Obama after Fox News (rightly so), now that Trump is after all of Media outlets not a peep from the Trump die-hards but praise. I'm sorry it is wrong, I don't care who does it.

Its a sign of a white house in chaos. And let's not forget that Trump himself has exposed info we got from the Israelis.
