Trump blindsided by implosion of GOP health care bill

While the president strategized with Republican lawmakers at the White House over steak, two senators were finalizing their statements tanking the current proposal.

By Josh Dawsey

07/18/2017 12:31 AM EDT

President Trump convened a strategy session over steak and succotash at the White House with senators Monday night, trying to plot an uphill path to repealing Obamacare and replacing it with a GOP alternative.

He made an impassioned pitch on why Republicans needed to do it now – and the political peril they could face if they didn’t “repeal and replace” after promising to do it for years. He also vented about Democrats and the legislative process. “He basically said, if we don’t do this, we’re in trouble,” said one person briefed on the meeting. “That we have the Senate, House and White House and we have to do it or we’re going to look terrible.”

Trump calls on Senate to end filibuster after healthcare defeat

By Jordan Fabian - 07/18/17 09:48 AM EDT

President Trump on Tuesday called on the Senate to end the legislative filibuster after the collapse of the Republican healthcare plan.

“The Senate must go to a 51 vote majority instead of current 60 votes. Even parts of full Repeal need 60. 8 Dems control Senate. Crazy!” Trump tweeted.

Getting rid of the filibuster, however, would not have guaranteed the success of the GOP plan to repeal and replace ObamaCare. The Senate considered the measure under budget reconciliation rules, which only required a 51-vote majority to pass.

Sens. Jerry Moran (R-Kan.) and Mike Lee (R-Utah) blindsided the White House Monday night by announcing their opposition to the bill, joining two of their GOP colleagues. That left Republicans short of the votes to move forward with the legislation.

Trump vented his frustration at the Senate over the failure of the effort to repeal and replace President Obama’s signature healthcare law, which has been a core GOP campaign pledge for years.

From what I've seen this bill sucked.

That said, I don't have any faith the Republicans can put anything better forward.   So much for having the House, Senate and the White House.   Fat lotta nuthin

From what I've seen the bill would have improved the ACA tremendously, including putting the brakes on an out of control entitlement (Medicaid).    But conservatives bailed, and the ACA will remain in place.

I support eliminating the filibuster, because (for example) the conservatives who bailed may have been placated if a conservative shibboleth like tort reform had been added to the bill.   Budget reconciliation significantly constrains the nature of the changes that can be included in a "revenue" bill.

His statements from last week indicated he knew Congress was failing.

And at the same time he was talking about being ready to sign it when it hit his desk.

If he was truly blindesided...it might have more to do with the smoke McConnell and company was blowing up his fourth point of contact than anything else.

The only way to improve the ACA is repeal it...take the original pages of the legislation (to include the handwritten ones and the ones that said "to be filled in later")...burn it on the steps of the Capitol and dump the ashes into the Potomac.

It would be considering that's where Pelosi and Lewis triumphantly rubbed the collective noses of the country in that POS bill.

You're like a broken record.  Ain't gonna happen.

The only broken record around here is a Liberal one that you have on repeat trying to convince us that the Conservative position is acceptance of the Government taking over 1/6 of our economy and bankrupting people and businesses in the process.

There is nothing good about the ACA for the people or the economy.  It's the cold hard truth that you are either incapable or unwilling to accept.

I'd go so far as to say that ANY bill thats 2300 pages long should be repealed.

And let's not forget that some of them were blank when it was passed.  That right there should have been a clue as to how bad this bill was.

Here's my rule of thumb: no bill should exceed the length of Atlas Shrugged, I.e. 1100 pages +/-.

Two GOP senators to vote against ObamaCare repeal-only bill

By Jordain Carney - 07/18/17 10:52 AM EDT

Republican Sens. Shelley Moore Capito (W.Va.) and Susan Collins (Maine) said on Tuesday that they will not support moving forward with the plan to repeal ObamaCare with a delayed replacement.

"My position on this issue is driven by its impact on West Virginians. With that in mind, I cannot vote to repeal ObamaCare without a replacement plan that addresses my concerns and the needs of West Virginians," Capito said in a statement.

Collins added to NBC that she is still a "no" on proceeding to the House-passed bill, which would be used as a vehicle for any Senate action.

The move leaves Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) with no room for error. With a 52-seat majority he can only afford to lose two senators and still let Vice President Mike Pence break a tie.

Sen. Rob Portman (R-Ohio) said early Tuesday he would need to review the bill, but told reporters that a repeal-only bill "will add to more uncertainty."

I bet what they are doing is throwing up false objections to try and get major pork added to the bill.

To be expected.

Big Government statists love big government Statism.

Socialists love Socialism.

Dependents love free shit taken from other people by the hand of government.

Government loves dependents who keep voting for them to remain in perpetual power as long as they give them free shit taken from other people.

Let's see how hard Trump and ol' Mitch work to garner the votes to repeal.  This would be a time to melt that Twitter button.  But I have my doubts that will happen.

This is usually about the time the Trumpers come in and blame us Conservatives for killing their 'rename and resuscitate' efforts in our striving for 'perfection over the good'.
