What was your first bike?
« on: July 12, 2017, 12:18:04 am »
My first bike. My dad picked it up from the Salvation Army for about $15.00. It had 26 in wheels. I had to roll it down to the street. I'd prop the wheels against the curb, with the pedal up. I'd grab the handle bars and step on the pedal and away I'd go. To stop I'd have to bail out into someone's yard. But it was MINE! The frame had broken and was brazed back together. It kept on breaking, but It got me biking for a while.

Maybe when he gets home mummy will take off the training wheel.

A snappy green and white model with training wheels, possibly a Schwin  that my Dad got on sale at the local Firestone in 1955 or so. My mother was pregnant with my third little brother at the time...I think the bike was a bribe to allow another kid in the house...

Schwinn single speed Racer with coaster brakes.

I stripped the fenders & headlight off and ditched the red & white seat but it was never as cool as my buddy's stingray - he had a glitter banana seat and a real steering wheel.

Early 70's I was 8-9 years old. Dad bought a 1950's style bike from neighbor for $2.

I stripped off the fenders, chain guard, rear shelf thingy etc. I even removed the metal emblems to save weight. spray painted it red, installed the most knobby tires I could find.

Actually it was a BMX bike for the era. Had a blast with that bike. It would go anywhere.

Would love to have it now.

Second hand.  Brown.  Not sure that was it's color or if that was rust.  Heavy sucker.  Big wheels, fat tires.  Dad put a new seat and new tires on it.  I was hard on it, but it was stable I could ride on the handlebars like an acrobat.  That was 1956 or 1957.  I really loved that unbeautiful bike because it gave me so much freedom.

Who remembers this sort of thing.

I can't remember not riding a bike and was making my own out of parts by the time I was 12 years old.

I got one new one for Christmas. After that I got good at fixing them, scrounging for parts, etc.

Every kid should have a simple bike and the 4 or 5 tools they would need to completely disassemble and reassemble it.

I think back then all you needed was a flat head screwdriver and a crescent wrench to be a licensed shadetree bike mechanic!

Ugg Hipsters.  Several years ago They had taken a liking to unicycles.  They were worse than circus mimes.  Rolling rocking bobbing and weaving....  Made you want to push a stick thu the spokes.

My father didn't believe in training wheels.
And to think, today I only wear a helmet by choice not under doctors orders.

I truly believe that training wheels are an impediment in learning to ride a bike.

I've never used a helmet on a non-motorized bike.
