I think in 20 years we could have some sort of FTL.... We are closer than we really think.
We're definitely on the verge of a great leap. There are some proven technologies out there that are short of FTL but far faster than what we're using now yet we lack the power to scale them up for effective human flight. White's work with the Alcubierre drive and his discovery of a far greater warping effect without needing to simulate a mass the size of Jupiter is a big deal.
People can laugh at these things but the space agencies of the world aren't laughing and that includes NASA.
