BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. –  A Florida sheriff’s office posted a controversial message on social media, urging citizens to arm themselves in self-defense.

Brevard County Sheriff Wayne Ivey posted the video on Facebook Wednesday, two days after a deadly workplace shooting in nearby Orlando claimed the lives of five people.

“Folks, now more than ever is the time for our citizens to be prepared to serve as the first line of defense, not only for them, but for their families,” Sheriff Ivey said.

As images of the Fort Lauderdale airport shooting and Pulse nightclub massacre flashed on-screen, Ivey warned residents that attacks have happened locally as well as abroad.

My husband's workplace will not allow concealed carry within the buildings.  Their written policy is immediate termination if caught.  But a gun in the car isn't worth a thing if someone comes in shooting.

But don't you see? This policy will keep everyone safe because disgruntled workers won't be tempted to bring a gun to work because it is against the rules.

Yeah, well, the owner is Scottish, so that probably is the "logic".

I can beat that.  The energy company I used to work for used a privately owned parking garage that had posted signs stating you couldn't even have a weapon in your vehicle.   And that was in Texas.  Liberals love to mess with Texas.   Most folks just ignored the signs, of course.  Safety first and all that.

LOL.  There was another thread where we all were discussing that there is a reason that certain stereotypes developed for certain people.  Hubby's boss regularly orders new technical equipment, like computers, electrical testing equipment, etc. from ebay.  The latest one we laughed about was ordering a "new" Lenovo computer from ebay for one of the product managers.  Someone came along and mentioned in front of the guy about how Lenovo had been caught putting spyware in their computers several years ago.  A couple weeks later at their Christmas lunch there was a Lenovo computer as a raffle/door prize.

I'm in a similar situation.  I normally need to drive my truck into the plant on a daily basis.  Getting caught with a weapon inside that fence would not only be a reason for being fired, I would also lose my security clearance (TWIC) and likely my License to Carry.  It could even be used against me with my professional engineering license.

My former employer had that policy. Working there was one of the reasons I became a concealed carrier in the first place, though, as I had to work some late evenings and walk to a dark parking garage. So I ignored their policy. They never knew.

The prohibition comes at you from many levels.   If its not the employer then it might be the landlord or the insurance company.

My business office lease includes a clause which prohibits weapons anywhere despite a state law which allows people to keep a firearm in their car.   They wouldn't even discuss removing the clause, entirely non-negotiable.   I think its partially driven by the insurance companies and their anti-gun stance.  Another factor is the lawyers who use it in lawsuits.

Apparently they think a policy banning firearms will keep someone from coming in and going postal.
