House cat protects family from intruder
By Vi Nguyen Published: June 8, 2017, 11:55 pm

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — An Indianapolis woman is calling her house cat a hero for protecting her family from a man trying to break into her home on the city’s southeast side.

The woman told police she was watching television in her living room when she heard someone at her front door.

It happened early Wednesday morning on Finley Avenue near Walker Avenue.

Cynthia Kootz told 24-Hour News 8 she got Binky about six years ago. She described him as loyal — her best friend and protector.

She said the man pushed open the screen window, and that’s when Binky came out of nowhere and attacked him twice.

“He never attacked anybody before and hurt them, but I’m glad he did that night,” she said.

On a beautiful Thursday afternoon, you can find Binky sitting on the front window sill.

Good kitty.

Years ago, I read a story about a woman who confronted a would-be rapist in her home.  Her cat attacked the intruder, scratching him severely and leaving one of its claws embedded in the guy's cheek.  He escaped, but he was so badly injured, he went to the emergency room, and that's where police arrested him.

We think of dogs as protectors, not cats, but some cats do have that measure of loyalty.  Or maybe there is a selfish motive -- like maybe the cat thinks the intruder will harm it and who cares about the human it lives with.  Allegedly, cats don't think too deeply, but who knows?

I think Persian and Siamese cats were used as guard cats way back when. Trained to attack from on high and scratch the eyes out of intruders.

I'm hoping for my birthday. September.

I may be doing some volunteer work next week with baby kittens, which will help lift me out of my depression. I'd adopt an older kitty, though. One who truly needs a home.

Never knew that. Friend of mine has a Siamese.  That cat would probably nuzzle the intruder to death. LOL Very affectionate.

An acquaintance of mine back in west Texas once had a Siamese Temple cat. This furrball was a monster, weighing in at about 20 lbs with no fat to speak of. Most of the time it was a typical cat, content to curl up in your lap, but that kitty cat could fight, I saw it kill a German Shepherd by clawing open it's throat.

@Applewood

I never heard that but as someone who has owned cats, and who grew up with them, I can tell you it's 100% not true.  They're as sharp and smart as can be.

There are videos of lionesses on the hunt, coordinating  blockade attacks among themselves...picking out an animal, getting into position from all sides, and running the prey to the cats hidden in the grass.  It's amazing to watch.  And any vet will tell you that the sole difference between those lions and domesticated house cats is poundage.

It sounds like that volunteer work will be just what you need.
