UK Election - Live Thread.
« on: June 07, 2017, 11:14:38 pm »
It's midnight, so may as well get this ready.

Polls open at 07:00 BST and close at 22:00 BST.
First results are usually announced by about midnight, the election is usually called about 4 AM and all results are usually in by 8 AM Friday.
I'll be following the BBC as they are more cautious in confirming votes and results. (Their charter requires them getting the results and current counts directly from the various Returning Officers, not some rando poll worker). This means a bit of delay, possibly, but a more accurate tally. I'll post the link once they finalize which one they are going to use.

A few facts for the ones who watch but don't really know the systems fraud prevention methods:

1/ It is a first past the post system. The leader of the party which gets 50% +1 of the MPs is the Prime Minister. Legal challenges for individual seats can and do happen, but they never delay the result.

2/ It will seem slow. We do NOT use electronic voting machines. Everything is pencil and paper and hand counted (three times).

3/ There will be no boxes of ballots "found." All ballots from each polling station are transported by the police directly to the counting office. Counting doesn't begin for a station until all boxes are accounted for.

4/ Postal votes are counted at the same time as the personal votes. A person who has requested a postal vote will be turned away from the polling station.

5/ There are no bussed voters. You vote in your assigned polling station, by post, or you don't vote at all. Polling stations are based on the current electoral register, which is updated once per year (failure to send in the update form lands you in court!).

6/ Each polling station recieves exactly the number of voting slips as there are people registered to that polling station plus 5 or 10. So if you are going to make a mistake, make it before 8 AM, cause you are out of luck otherwise! The blank voting slips are also counted and tallied against the number of people per station that didn't vote. Any discrepency triggers a recount for that station and the opening of a police enquiry.

Hope that helps some! We've been doing this a while and the system is pretty airtight now.

No. It were suggested about the same time as the Aussies did it, but never became law. Mandatory registration to vote, yes. The act of voting or not is up to the individual.

Interesting.  I just assumed they followed England's lead on that.

An Aussie Captain I worked with in Afghanistan was absolutely gobsmacked when I told him the largest percentage of registered voters to ever cast a ballot in a U.S. presidential election was 48%.

Aussies get fined if they don't vote.  Not sure if that's such a great idea.  You may get people making curveball votes just cause they're pissed at being forced to vote.

As a matter of party, I support the Conservatives.

This doesn't always translate to voting for the Conservative candidate for my borough. My borough almost always returns a Labour MP (Who is, to be fair, a decent enough MP), meaning my voting and campaigning for the Conservative candidate is a matter of personal honor rather than hopes of effecting a change.
Last election I voted the Labour guy though, since the UKIP candidate had a very good chance of unseating Efford and there were no way I was tolerating a National Front retread as MP.

UK election: Opinion poll swing the greatest I've ever seen, says Sir David Butler

.... Sir David has been as confused as anyone by the opinion polls that have been darting around during the current British election campaign.

The Conservatives started the campaign around 20 points ahead, but recent polls suggest that figure is now in the single digits.

"The swing recorded by the opinion polls is greater than in any previous election," he says, "There is something very puzzling going on in the polls and somebody is going to get hurt by the results and we don't know who yet." ....

Full article, including why he is one of the few election analysts worth listening to over here: http://www.abc.net.au/news/2017-06-07/election-night-pioneer-sir-david-butler-on-uk-election/8597312

From your keyboard to God's eyes.

Went and voted, 30 minutes after the polls opened. It wasn't busy, the first thing rush had subsided - Sera, one of the poll workers said it had been roughly same numbers as last time.

There were two poll watchers outside the polling station, one Labour and one Conservative, checking voting cards. Don't know the Conservative guy, but the Labour one is a neighbour - decent woman despite her politics. Means either that the Conservatives think our seat is in play or Labour is worried that it's in play, and they'll send crews around the area after 6 tonight knocking on doors of people who haven't voted. That's a bit of an irritant, but doesn't happen very often.

@EC , thanks for making this thread.

I liked the Monster Raving Looney Party. Vote Katmandu!  8888sitting kitty

Here are two more names for MP I'll throw out just because it's 5 am and I'm in a silly mood.
Francis Urquart and Jim Hacker.

Now seriously, I'll be following the election

P.S. Who ever gets elected better not get rid of Larry. I have his picture on my wall, next to a portrait of the Queen. (When she was younger of course). I'm such a dang Anglophile 🇬🇧

UK election: Conservatives eye votes in Labour heartland

The north of England, a former industrial heartland, was long a bastion of support for the centre-left Labour party. But last year the region voted to leave the European Union, while Labour campaigned in favour of remaining in the bloc. So which way will the north lean in this Thursday's general election? And how might the recent terror attacks in Manchester and London impact on the results? Our correspondent reports from Manchester and Hartlepool.

Live Polls predicting Tory win BUT those sounds like the famed exit polls. Polling really fell on its face in the last US election, so who knows?

According to the polls, the last UK general election was supposed to be a hung Parliament again, and Brexit was to be narrowly defeated.

Don't trust the polls. The English especially have a long history of screwing with pollsters just because they can, and it's become almost fashionable now to do it. Scots not so much - they tend to speak their minds loudly and far too often.  :tongue2:

Well, that's pretty definite.
