Jeremy Corbyn has backtracked on his demand for Theresa May to resign over the London Bridge atrocity.
The Labour leader was accused of ‘ridiculous posturing’ when he called on the PM to step down just three days before the general election.
May faced widespread criticism for cutting police numbers by 20,000 when she was Home Secretary under David Cameron.
Asked by ITV News on Monday morning if he backed calls for May to resign, Corbyn said: ‘Indeed I would, because there have been calls made by a lot of very responsible people on this who are very worried that she was at the Home Office for all this time, presided over these cuts in police numbers, and is now saying that we have a problem. Yes, we do have a problem.
‘We should never have cut the police numbers.’
But just hours later he contradicted this.
Asked in an interview on Monday evening if he thought May should resign immediately, he said: ‘No.’
Corbyn and May have both been facing pressure for their records on terror and security.
While the PM presided over intense police cuts, the Tories have repeatedly accused Corbyn of previously boasting about voting against every counter-terrorism measure over the past 30 years.
