Seattle council approves controversial soda tax

Well they did it.

The Seattle City Council passed a soda tax Monday that will place a new fee on sugary beverages sold within the city.

“The scientific evidence is incontrovertible … sugar-sweetened beverage consumption leads to negative health outcomes,” said Councilmember Tim Burgess shortly before voting to pass the soda tax. “Communities of color and young people are disproportionately targeted by the beverage industry’s advertising and marketing campaigns. Black children and teens see twice as many ads for soda and other sweetened beverages compared to white children and other teens.”

Burgess argued the sugary drinks are the leading source of excess calories and are linked to heart disease, dental disease and other chronic illnesses, disproportionately affecting minorities.

“Daily consumption of just one sugary drink increases a child’s chance of obesity by 55 percent and diabetes by 26 percent,” he said.

The new soda tax places a .0175 per ounce fee on sweetened beverages. The tax is initially paid for by distributors, but the cost will likely be passed along to the customer.

Well considering that the city of Seattle doesn't have a health care program or insures it's citizens, it looks like the only thing that raising taxes will do is fill their pockets........unless they plan on using every cent for free healthcare to fat people.

The powers that be in Seattle have over the last 15 or 20 years ruined what use to be a jewel as big cities go. Now a destination for homeless and heroin addicts up and down the west coast. I am ashamed of the city I see accross the lake, and the socialist that govern it.

Could be worse. You could be living in the lake instead of across it. It makes typing on a computer a real bitch.

Gotta think positive.

And because we compassionate progressives truly believe black folk are incapable of making their own decisions, we'll do it for them - as soon as they come in from the fields.

1.75 cents per ounce tax

2 Liters = 67.6 ounces, or $1.18 in taxes on an item that can be purchased for $0.99

I guess Seattle didn't learn anything from Philadelphia's tax experiment.
In Philadelphia, people just went elsewhere to buy their beverages. Lost jobs, lost tax revenue, no reduction in consumption.

Awesome...so the food places that were barely hanging on after the city hiked the minimum wage to $12 an hour will see there bottom line eroded even more with this BS.

Out of their benevolence the city council exempted "Diet" soda's from the tax.  So now they won't get fat from the sugar drinks....they will just get cancer from the carcinogens in artificial sweeteners!  Bless their pea pickin little hearts.

Which in turn will force them to sign up for a state run health exchange so they can get treatment for their pre-existing condition.
