Britain PM Theresa May Calls to ‘Regulate Cyberspace’ And Critics Are Going Ballistic
David Z. Morris
5:42 PM ET

British Prime Minister Theresa May has responded to last night’s attack in central London in part by calling for tighter controls on online communication. Her words have outraged some technologists who say that the proposal is both unacceptable and at fundamental odds with the spirit of the Internet.

"We cannot allow this ideology the safe space it needs to breed," May said. "Yet that is precisely what the Internet, and the big companies that provide Internet-based services, provide. We need to work with allied democratic governments to reach international agreements that regulate cyberspace to prevent the spread of extremist and terrorism planning. And we need to do everything we can at home to reduce the risks of extremism online."

She added: "We need to deprive the extremists of their safe spaces online."

I will need to read the details but on the surface, censoring jihadists websites I'd be all for.  It sounds like this is their main way of recruiting. This has been in the news today.

Yes, but she's blaming "extremism" instead of islam or jihadiasm.

She said "Islamic Extremism" as near as I can tell.

Anyway, that's getting technical with words but if one has an objection, so be it.

I can't find the full text of the speech right now, but I do find this:  ""There is, to be frank, too much tolerance of extremism in our country," she said after seven people died and nearly 50 others were injured in an attack Saturday night in the heart of the British capital. "

And, no, it's not technical, it's real.  For instance, here we look hard for "home-grown extremists", such as those who call themselves "patriots" or UKIP in England.   Refusing to acknowledge the "islamic" part makes it possible to continue to ignore the real problem.   Secondly, islamic extremism isn't extremism at all - it's merely the expression of islam as ordered by Muhammed.

Never would have heard Cameron or Brown talk like that.

I know Hannity, Limbaugh, someone picked up that under Obama, we refused to call it "Islamic Terrorism" and then, some of the candidates picked it up.

Now, they say because of the attacks, this may hurt May but in turn, who do they vote for? Liberals? She hasn't been PM for very long.

It wasn't that he refused to...he basically told everyone in the Executive Branch and at the DoD that Islamic Terrorism was verboten and that violent extremism was the new approved PC term to be used.

They knew who these guys were.  They don't need more ability to monitor citizens.   How about starting with not letting people in who are radicals and who have fought for ISIS?

I know thats a radical idea but it seems to be the most bang for the buck.

It's probably the only idea that might actually work.  BUT...how do you filter the "radical" muslims out of the rest of the rainbows & unicorns, teddy bears and peace-loving Religion of Peace muslims?

Especially when the non Radical Islamic people in the communities are terrified of reporting the Jihadists that live among them.

If that was what she meant then why isn't that what she said?  Oh wait.... politician speak.  Can't ever say it like it is... gotta cloak it in PC garble and BS.

Nevermind.

Extremism "online" isn't your main problem, Ms. May.  Get... a.... clue.   Grasping at straws is not a flattering pose when you're facing another election.

And cutting the police force is not going to play well among voters this time.

Oh....no, no, no, no, no.   Can't do that.  That would be waaacist.  Also waaacist to infiltrate and monitor the mosques, where most of the communication is actually going on.  Nah.  Must...regulate...internet.  Only way to be sure.  (yeah, that's /s)

Muslims hell, what about the non muslims who may have other reasons to oppose government?

As we've seen in this country, a toe in the door is a good enough reason to start kicking down the rest of the doors in the house.
