Poll Dive Hits British PM's Election Battle
 Naharnet Newsdesk 4 hours ago

British Prime Minister Theresa May was fighting to shore up her general election campaign on Wednesday after a shock projection suggested she could lose her parliamentary majority, leaving the pound wobbling.

The landslide victory May hoped to seal by calling a snap election for June 8 seemed much less likely with eight days to go, with the polls narrowing and her Conservative party's manifesto coming under scrutiny.

The opposition Labor party, led by veteran socialist Jeremy Corbyn, has gradually nibbled away at the Conservative lead in the polls, with the campaign back in full swing after the Manchester terror attack.

But May insisted she had the best plan for taking Britain into negotiations over its exit from the European Union, which start 11 days after the election.

If campaign literature is anything to go by, there may be something to this. So far this week, I've had one from Labour, despite the current MP being Labour (it's a working class area, therefore traditionally Labour), one from the Lib Dems (no idea what that one said, it went in the bin unread) and 9 from the Tories.

They had a seven way debate of which May did not attend.

BBC debate: Rivals attack Theresa May over absence

Theresa May's political rivals lined up to criticise her for not taking part in a seven-way general election debate.

She was accused of lacking "guts" and of "running away from the debate" during the 90 minute BBC TV event.

Home Secretary Amber Rudd, who represented the Conservatives, said "part of being a good leader is having a good, strong team".

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn did not directly attack Mrs May's absence as he clashed with Ms Rudd over cuts.

Maybe a general British election thread will be needed.

Planning on a live thread on the day itself - at least I'm not a poll watcher this time!
