The height of selfish, self-involved society is upon us. Forget marriage, children, and the growth these relationships bring, ‘sologamists’ are marrying themselves.

Sologamy, or marrying one’s self, isn’t illegal, but it’s also not recognized as a legal union in any state.

Sounds pathetic, but whatever floats your boat.  It is interesting to see the de-prioritizing of marriage among twenty somethings;  kids come if at all in one's thirties.  Even among couples that appear devoted to one another,  no one's in a hurry to marry.

The woman in question is 37. It doesn't seem so much like empowerment as it does desperation. Believe me, I can relate, but I'm not going to rent a tux and tails and blow my life savings on marrying myself as long as I don't get the benefits (mostly tax-related).

I'll also note that she's from New York City, where despite having countless choices people seem to find it far more difficult to settle down.

Some years ago I told my wife that just when you think libs can't do or say anything nuttier than some crazy thing they're doing at the time, they make a liar out of you.
I'm done trying to persuade myself that, surely, libs can't do something stupider than some crazy thing they've just done.  They always come up with something stupider than the last thing.

That part I understand all to well. But marrying yourself seems to me not empowering but reeking of desperation and low self esteem.

Buy yourself a pretty dress. Go on a vacation. It's ok to do those things alone. It's ok if a man isn't going to see you in the dress. Just be happy. We aren't on this big blue marble long, only about 80 some years if we are lucky. Being single isn't the worst thing that will ever happen to someone.
It's better than being a battered spouse.

There aren't too many straight men in that area. Add only wanting to marry someone of your same faith and education, and there is no one in the dating pool.

Trust me on this. It's dry there once you hit thirty. And most guys prior to that just want to make money and party, in the city.
