There is no reason for assuming Republicans, even in "deep red states" support the free market. There is a massive faction in the GOP, perhaps the dominant faction among elected officials, that is pro-business, and will trample free market principles on behalf of the interests of large incumbents in the market and against the interests of smaller businesses and consumers who all benefit from a robustly competitive market.
Pro-business and pro-market are not the same thing, and are often diametrically opposed.
And these same Republicans are trying to push through HB 1514, which would require wine producers, in order to label their wine as "Texas wine", to use grapes that are 100% grown in Texas.
I've got a thread started in "The Vineyard" for those interested. IMO, this is a slap at smaller producers, such as Lost Oak Winery in Burleson who buy their grapes from other states, just to meet their demand. I've been a club member of Lost Oak for three plus years, and if there's a vintage you like, it's wise to load up because they usually sell out in a few months.
The idea sounds good, but it reflects a lack of understanding about the Texas wine industry, which has grown from #10 to #6 in the US over the past several years. It's not about the label, it's what these producers do with the grapes that has engineered the growth. They've opened up the industry to regular people, not the snippy oenophiles from Napa.
