Jeremy Corbyn has warned he will not ‘play by the rules’ in the general election campaign in his first major speech since Theresa May announced the vote.

And the Labour leader told his political rivals that defeat for his party is not a ‘foregone conclusion’ – despite what they might think.

Theresa May’s Conservative party holds a large lead over Labour in the polls ahead of the vote on June 8, but Mr Corbyn was bullish in today’s speech.

In the speech in London, he said: ‘Much of the media and establishment are saying this election is a foregone conclusion.

‘They think there are rules in politics, which if you don’t follow by doffing your cap to powerful people, accepting that things can’t really change, then you can’t win.

‘They say I don’t play by the rules – their rules. We can’t win, they say, because we don’t play their game.

‘They’re quite right I don’t. And a Labour Government elected on June 8 won’t play by their rules.’

Mr Corbyn promised to fight for Britain’s ‘true wealth creators’ to overturn a ‘rigged system’ that favours the rich.

And he refused to say the election is a vote on Brexit – instead telling voters they have a chance to judge the Conservatives’ record on austerity and cuts to public spending.
