Germany rejects Trump claim: ‘There is no debt account at NATO’
By Rebecca Savransky - 03/19/17 08:48 AM EDT

Germany is disputing President Trump's claim that it owes "vast sums of money" to NATO and the U.S.

"There is no debt account at NATO," German Defense Minister Ursula von der Leyen said in a statement, Reuters reported.

"Defense spending also goes into UN peacekeeping missions, into our European missions and into our contribution to the fight against [ISIS] terrorism."

It was the oddest of meetings between a U.S. President and another countries leader I think I ever saw.    I don't know what the facts are about Germany's dept to NATO or the U.S. but  we must never falter on defending NATO’s most exposed and vulnerable allies—that would potentially be inviting a devastating war, rather than deterring it. The U.S. is the leader of the Atlantic alliance and has an indispensable role in making its collective deterrent sufficiently robust and credible.

A finance ministry official said one reason the country wouldn't spend more on the military was the large number of migrants in the country. The official said some EUR20 billion a year would be needed to fund language courses, training and welfare payments for the more than one million asylum seekers who have arrived since the start of 2015.

They've got a winning strategy there.
