The Unites States Senate confirmed Rick Perry a former Texas Governor who called Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan an “Islamist terrorist” during a speech in 2012, as Energy Secretary in President Donald Trump’s cabinet.

During the hearing in the Senate on Thursday, Perry was confirmed as the head of the Energy Department by 62 votes in favor of him while 37 voted against. Perry will also lead an agency, Energy Research and Development Administration, largely focused on overseeing the nation’s vast arsenal of nuclear weapons, as well as a network of 17 national scientific laboratories.

In January 2012, Perry questioned Turkey’s status in NATO and said Turkey is a country “being governed by what many would perceive to be Islamic terrorists.”
