The primary reason for early astronauts being chosen from the ranks of the air force fighter pilots was their tolerance for Gs in maneuvering. Normal people puke readily to vestibular changes. If the seats on the SpaceX flight are for sale to the highest bidder, an extra pack of vomit bags are probably called for.
Chuck Yeager said he was never interested in NASA and NASA would have never chosen him. He said he was a daredevil and that was the last thing NASA wanted. He said they wanted pilots who would follow orders and they were also much more highly educated.
Its amazing how many of them passed through the University of Michigan. Even many of our modern astronauts pass through UofM like Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield.
Despite all the BS, UofM still provides some valuable training in the right areas.
