German hostage beheaded by Philippine Islamists: govt

Manila (AFP) - Islamic militants in the Philippines have beheaded a 70-year-old German hostage they were holding for ransom, Manila officials said Monday, as Berlin condemned the murder as "unscrupulous and inhumane".

The Abu Sayyaf group, blamed for the worst terror attacks in Philippine history, had demanded a ransom of 30 million pesos ($600,000) be paid by Sunday to spare Jurgen Kantner.

After the expiration of the deadline the jihadists, which were monitored by intelligence group SITE, posted a gruesome video showing Kantner being killed by a knife-wielding man.

Actually the Philippines is a great place to live but it's not for everybody. It has always been quite dangerous as with all third world countries. Unfortunately, most of the retirement hype you see fails to mention the very real risks to living there. May this gentleman RIP..

This is not the first time the German couple has been attacked at sea. Jurgen Kantner and Sabrina Merz were kidnapped by Somali pirates in 2008, the Strait Times reported. A ransom was paid to secure their release after over 50 days in the grips of pirates.
