Malaysia Recalls Envoy to North Korea Amid Standoff Over Kim’s Body
Malaysia recalled its ambassador to North Korea on Monday amid rising tensions between the two countries over Kuala Lumpur’s refusal to hand over the body of Kim Jong Un’s half-brother following his apparent assassination at a Malaysian airport a week ago.
North Korean Ambassador Kang Chol was also summoned to Wisma Putra, Malaysia’s foreign ministry, over his verbal attack on the Malaysian government late Friday outside the hospital morgue in Malaysia’s capital where the body of Kim Jong Nam was being held.
“The Malaysian Government takes very seriously any unfounded attempt to tarnish its reputation,” the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement, adding that it viewed the criticism made by the North Korean envoy as “baseless.”
