Fractals are repeating patterns that occur at increasingly fine magnifications
They are found throughout nature, from clouds and rocks to neurons
Fractal characteristics at edges of inkblots may explain image associations

From bats to jack-o-lanterns, Rorschach’s inkblots brought out a vast array of image associations during their use, with up to 300 different images recorded for each of the 10 blots.

Now, researchers may have figured out why.

A new study found that fractal characteristics at the edges of the blots may give rise to their differing interpretations, as they are fooling the visual system....

That one figure is incorrect.  The right two are two separate items on the test.

Why this study is useful:

Quote
The researchers are part of an ongoing effort to better understand the connection between vision and nature, and Taylor received a $900,000 grant from the WM Keck Foundation last January to pursue fractal-based implants.

‘All of our studies are highlighting an effect called fractal fluency,’ Taylor said.

‘The eye has evolved to the efficiently process the fractal patterns found in nature’s scenery. This reduces the observer’s stress by up to 60 percent.

‘If you don’t build fractal fluency into a bionic eye, not only have you lost the ability to navigate, you’ve also lost that symbiotic relationship with nature’s fractal patterns.’
