Texas woman gets 8 years in prison for voting illegally
« on: February 11, 2017, 01:37:50 pm »
FORT WORTH

In a case that state Attorney General Ken Paxton said “shows how serious Texas is about keeping its elections secure,” a Grand Prairie woman who isn’t a U.S. citizen was sentenced to eight years in prison Thursday for voting illegally.

A Tarrant County jury handed down the sentence after finding Rosa Maria Ortega, 37, guilty Wednesday of voting in Dallas County in the 2012 general election and the 2014 Republican primary runoff. Ortega has a green card

“This case shows how serious Texas is about keeping its elections secure, and the outcome sends a message that violators of the state’s election law will be prosecuted to the fullest,” Paxton said in an emailed statement. “Safeguarding the integrity of our elections is essential to preserving our democracy.”

One out of xxxxxxxxxx (who knows how many) actually prosecuted, convicted, and sentenced!  It's a start!

@Sanguine @Bigun

Imo, this story is like a cockroach. If you see ONE there are 10,000 more in the walls.

ABSOLUTELY!!! The story comes from Texas not California or New Hampshire!

Let's hope it gets plenty of publicity.  This kind of example is really the only tool the state has to maintain the integrity of elections (and thus save the property of taxpayers).

I'm pretty conservative but I don't like this one bit.

For one, the sentence seems harsh to me.  Comparable to sentences for other crime it seems way out of balance.  My guess is they are making her a scapegoat for voter fraud in general.  I'd give her a year.

The bigger issue is someone let her vote illegally.  In Texas they have a team setup at a table to check and double check your legitimacy as you log in to vote.  You move down the line from one person to the next, each checking you are truly qualified to vote.  This means multiple people let her pass and it could hardly be an accident.  So now we're into the big "C" word - conspiracy which sets off all sorts of dog whistles and makes people freak out.

If you want to go around handing down 8 year sentences you're barking up the wrong tree.  Nail the conspirators instead.

---------

Every election cycle I can remember we see the same exact pattern.  A few cases of voter fraud pop up and those in charge of that particular precinct are told, "we're really mad at you, don't do it again".  Then they do it again next time around.

No accountability.

If it happened just once a person could brush it off as a few rogue operators.  And if it happened twice you'd have some major red flags popping up.  But let me repeat - Every election cycle I can remember we see the same exact pattern.

---------

Let's take this to the next step of accountability - who does the reprimanding?  Ah, now we're down to the crux of the matter.  The Democratic Party is in charge of doing their own reprimanding.  It is the party themselves who are saying, "we're really mad at you, don't do it again".  Nod nod wink wink.

There's your problem.  No one is watching the watchers.

Now every now and then you'll get a Democratic president who decides to sic his Justice Department dogs on conservative states for "voting irregularities" in the past - like in the 1960's.  In their determined pursuit for justice they will slap down these states by assigning monitors at the polls.  They've even tried bringing in monitors from the United Nations, which is a whole other can of worms.

But oddly enough Republican presidents never return the favor.  I guess they don't want to come off as mean spirited.  Who knows, but it's no secret you could send a team into Illinois or California and have a field day rooting out voter fraud.  But no, they give them a blank check instead.

There is a lot of blame to go around - a big heaping mountain of blame.  I hate to see it all dumped on one single person.

....

I disagree.  I see voting illegally as being an existential threat to our representative republic.

And, secondly, the people at the voting booth would have no idea if she were voting illegally or not, if she illegally registered to vote and used illegally obtained ID documentation.  Why put her actions on them?  Heck, a lot of places don't even ask for ID!

Right. And somebody has to go to jail. This falls under the category of sending a message loud and clear.

I think there is host of illegals and green card holders that have voted, It may be as this word gets out those who have broken election laws will beat feet to south of the border.  Texas is doing right!

To those who think this punishment is extreme, I say these people are not American citizens, they are illegal criminal invaders and should be dealt with harshly to make them think twice about coming here; we have more than enough of our own home grown criminals to deal with.

It is beyond time for them to get out of get out of our country or pay dearly for their contempt for our nation and our law. I'm sure many of them have heart breaking stories about living in their country but I ask you; how is that our problem.
Facts, Reason, Logic and Common Sense when consistently applied ultimately leads to the proper conclusion!  It worked for our Founding Fathers.

Voting more than once could be an inside job. Or it could be the result of a flawed system.

Where I live, we have tables of 3 people.  The tables are divided according to wards and districts.  You have to find which table serves your ward and district.  They aren't marked, so you have to go from table to table before you find the right one.  One person looks up your registration in a registration log.  Another locates your card in a card file.  The third person stamps your card and gives you a receipt.  That's it.  It's the most inefficient system and opens the door for fraud.  Also, since attempts at voter ID have been struck down in the courts, the people behind the table have no idea whether you really are the registered voter on their card or in their ledger.

Last November, I had to stand in line at 3 different tables before I found the right table.   Took me longer to get "checked in" than it did to actually vote.

We desperately need fixes to our voting procedures, but most politicians aren't interested in overhaul. The ones who are get their backsides handed to them by the courts.

Once she had her (illegal) voter registration, what would the people letting her vote check against?  They confirm she is registered to vote.  She was.  She lied when she registered; she claimed she was a citizen after getting turned down when she wasn't.

I guess there is an advantage of sorts, living in a rural state, when you walk in to vote the election lady, who is married to your friend from Junior High School, says "Hi bighead".

She had been successfully voting for years without her registration getting turned down.

I was responding to a post discussing allowing her to vote without a check.  She was registered (illegally).  What would the people at the voting place be expected to check except her registration?

Isn't this the same woman who had also used a fraudulent social security number?  I think she got off easy, considering the other crime she had already committed.
