2 GOP Senators Voting Against DeVos, Which Could Mean a Tie
Mike Pence would then be the tie-breaker

(Newser) – Betsy DeVos' confirmation vote in the Senate Wednesday will be tight: Two Republican senators announced Wednesday that they will oppose Devos' nomination to be secretary of Education. Assuming all of the Senate's 48 Democrats also oppose DeVos, that means she'd have 50 yes votes and 50 no votes if no other Republicans oppose her, with Vice President Mike Pence potentially breaking the tie, the Hill reports. Sen. Susan Collins of Maine was the first to announce on the Senate floor that she would vote against DeVos, making her the first Republican to oppose one of President Trump's cabinet nominees. Sen. Lisa Murkowski of Alaska was the second to announce she would vote no.

Collins said it was a "very difficult decision," but that she was "troubled and surprised" by DeVos' lack of familiarity with the Individuals With Disabilities Education Act. Murkowski said she had "serious concerns" about DeVos, and that "thousands, truly thousands" of her constituents had called her expressing their own concerns. ...

I know Michele Malkin has concerns.

My main concern is that she's another establishment insider.

Yep. The GOP's weak sisters.
"The most terrifying force of death, comes from the hands of Men who wanted to be left Alone. They try, so very hard, to mind their own business and provide for themselves and those they love. They resist every impulse to fight back, knowing the forced and permanent change of life that will come from it. They know, that the moment they fight back, their lives as they have lived them, are over. -Alexander Solzhenitsyn

Well, damn, if someone had told me I'd be agreeing with Collins and Murkowski on appointments, I'd have called them a liar.

So you think that a Dem in her seat would have magically voted for DeVos?

Wow.

Looks like the GOP finally got what they admired most about the democrats, a blindly obedient base that doesn't trouble themselves with any of that pesky thinking crap.

You should have seen the rage I inspired on twitter this morning when I asked if anyone knows where Neil Gorsuch stands on things like federalism, campaign finance or eminent domain. I didn't get any answers but I was accused of being a traitor among other things.  :silly:

Wow.

What would the difference be on this particular vote? Same result. The difference OVERALL would be that the GOP, sans those two liberals, would be a better entity for their absence. Better an enemy in their own camp. Unless you believe Hamilton was a fool that didn't know what he was talking about.

Sen. Susan Collins of Maine
Sen. Lisa Murkowski of Alaska

I coulda guessed that one.

The two said they 'doubted DeVos' commitment to public schools'.

And they think thats a bad thing.

On this vote.

There are many other votes on which I'm glad for their support.

Careful there.  To way too many Trump supporters, anti-Trump is by definition traitorous.

I had pretty much the exact same concerns about John Roberts when he was being portrayed as the second coming of William Rehnquist.

He wasn't.
