How does both the Nats' pitching staff and the Cubs' pitching staff showing a 2.08 ERA for
this division series strike you, then? ;)

That would tell me that my thoughts on the pitching staffs resting were correct.

Clayton Kershaw said after the Dodger sweep that the break between today and the start
of the NLCS would be huge for the Dodger bullpen especially. I'm guessing Kershaw will
do some throwing during the break since if he starts Game One of the NLCS (very distinct
possibility) he'd be on eight days' rest. It wouldn't exactly hurt him---lifetime, he has a
1.71 ERA and a 0.99 WHIP on more than six days' rest---but I'd be surprised if he took
no chances and did a full bullpen session or its equivalent between today and Saturday.

I was sick to my stomach watching Kendricks baffle the NATS lineup in Game 1.

I've suffered too much between them and the CAPS.   Always a bridesmaid.....  sigh.

And then to see Sherzer's effort wasted.  To see Turner not bunting for a basehit?  To see Harper suck Fat Lady's ***??

And now I'm convinced the entire team is sick from the effects of mold from the hotel in which they're staying.

It's why Strasburg refused the ball for an elimination game, a decision that is Living in Infamy on local sports talk radio.

Is he indeed a French Poodle?   Too hot/humid, he takes himself out.  Too cold...I'm outta here.  And the NATS historically protect him.  And pamper him.

While Tanner Roark would pitch in hail storm if it would help the team win.  And giving us a good six innings!

I'm glad today's game was rained out.  Give them a chance to breathe better air.  (Sure as hell hope they moved to another hotel)

Joe Torre said that the reason was that it's too easy to blow a starter with lengthy rain delays, and they throw up to 45 minutes finding their 'stuff'.

I saw this morning Strasburg declined a start. Crazy.

From the article:

This is an incredible development. The playoffs are a time to make history and receive glory. The postseason is when Curt Schilling pitched with blood pouring out of his ankle and when Willis Reed played through a torn muscle in the NBA Finals. Yet Strasburg is turning down the opportunity to pitch because he’s under the weather? That will not reflect well on him at all.

As for Baker, he now comes off looking much better. Many were in disbelief that he wouldn’t have had Strasburg pitch the game. Now it turns out he actually was dutifully covering for his pitcher.

Joe Torre said that the reason was that it's too easy to blow a starter with lengthy rain delays, and they throw up to 45 minutes finding their 'stuff'.
Either that, or trying to pitch in damp weather conditions can wreak havoc on an arm.

When Herb Score was coming back from the season he lost due to that line drive into his face,
he was scheduled to pitch in Washington on a cold and wet night. He got through three innings
with a 2-1 lead, then felt something sore in his upper forearm. He pitched on and by the seventh
inning his elbow was killing him. He came out of the game, saw a specialist and learned he'd
blown a tendon in his elbow.

Score sat out a month until he thought the problem was solved (in that time, 1958, there was
no Tommy John surgery), then Bragan brought him in in relief to get him back on the stick,
again in Washington. Score struck out five of the first eight hitters he faced, then with two
out in the ninth he "felt like someone stabbed me in my left arm." He pitched on and off
the rest of the season and thought his arm and elbow felt fine come 1959 spring training---
but he learned the hard way that his mechanics were fouled up trying to compensate for
his elbow issue. He was never again the pitcher he was before the liner to the face, but
it wasn't the liner to the face that screwed up his career---it was a blown elbow that
began when he pitched in cold, damp, wet conditions.

Score told the story himself to Terry Pluto for The Curse of Rocky Colavito.

Now the reports are out that Strasburg will, in fact, start.
Guess we will wait until game time....

Actually, Strasburg felt ill Tuesday and caught a huge break with Tuesday's game being postponed.
The reporting out of Chicago is that Strasburg was first on the team bus to Wrigley Field and told Baker
he felt well enough to pitch after having Tuesday to rest up. And Baker moved accordingly. Because
the postponement should have reminded everyone that when you have the game you absolutely have
to win to stay alive coming, you don't really want Tanner Roark starting it for you if you can help it.

If Roark had started Game Four assuming it was played on Tuesday, it would have been all bullpen
hands on deck. And there's where Baker might have caught a small break---he hadn't used his two
best relief pitchers, Sean Doolittle and Ryan Madson, in Game Three at all, and Baker could have
given the game to Madson at the first sign of serious trouble from Roark. Since Madson has starting
experience, he could have gone several innings before Baker would have had to think about maybe
a five- or six-out save out of Doolittle.

But the rain postponement came and Baker got lucky when Strasburg came to him this morning
telling him he could go. (If you've ever gone to Chicago in the middle of changing weather, you'd
know it's entirely possible to feel ill from the change when you first get there.)

And if you pitch Strasburg today and win, you go back to Gio Gonzalez for Game Five on his
regular rest. Gonzalez pitched well in Game Two; he was ruined by an unlikely error at third base
and a home run shortly afterward. But he's not even close to the guy you should be afraid to send
out for a Game Five if you get there. And, back to the Doolittle-Madson factor, if Strasburg gets
into trouble Baker has those pen options to play and hold fort.

Right now I can see Baker planning his immediate future and writing Max Scherzer's name in to start
Game One of a League Championship Series if the Nats get there. With possibly Roark in Game Two
and Strasburg in Game Three. Unless Scherzer's hamstring starts barking again. If it does, Baker's
going to have to channel his inner Flying Wallenda to think about his pitching matchups.

So funny.... they just showed the CUBS bullpen out where Stephen Strasburg was long tossing in the outfield.

Couple of guys were donning medical masks over their noses/mouths.

5-0 Nats, top of the eighth---Michael Taylor: grand salami off Cubs closer Wade Davis in the top
of the eighth.

Stephen Strasburg---12 punchouts in seven innings.

Who needs the nose masks now? ;)

On to game five and it matters not a bit to me who wins it as long as it goes 27 innings.

Wow.

The grand slam explains why it was 1- zip the last time I checked and is magically 5-0 now!

Go Nats!

Daniel Murphy---solo shot on the first pitch of the bottom of the second. Michael A. Taylor---grand salami
in his last time up in Game Four, three-run homer in his first time up in Game Five. 4-1, Nationals, bottom
of the first . . .

One run in on an infield out, one in on a wild pitch, the Nats' lead cut to a run . . . 4-3, Nats,
middle of the third, and the Nats bullpen is stirring . . .

A one-out single and a runner stranded in the bottom of the third, the Nats still lead
4-3 but Gio Gonzalez is coming out of the game, it looks like . . . Gonzalez didn't really
have the handle today . . . Kyle Hendricks may be coming out of the game for the Cubs,
too, depending on what the Cubs do in the top of the fourth . . .

Three up, three down for the Cubs in the top of the fourth including Kyle Hendricks hitting
for himself . . . the Nats lead it, 4-3, going to the bottom . . .

Ryan Zimmerman flies out to left with first and second and two out, the Nats still lead, 4-3 after
four, and it looks like the Nats are going to give the game to Max Scherzer out of the bullpen . . .
Scherzer getting a standing O as he comes in from the bullpen . . .

Scherzer surrenders an infield hit, a line single, a two-run double on two outs . . .
then strike three to Javier Baez shoots past Nats catcher Matt Wieters . . .
he throws wild to first to complete the strikeout . . . Russell comes home to score
. . . 6-4, Cubs, top of the fifth . . .

Abetted by Jayson Werth's stumbling, Russell doubles again in the top of the sixth, this time
sending home Zobrist, and it's 8-4, Cubs, going to the bottom of the sixth . . .
