PHILADELPHIA — House Majority Whip Steve Scalise warned Friday that Democrats who vote against legislation to reform health insurance could face the political wrath of President Trump, who will travel to their home states and campaign against them.
"I like the idea that we have a president who is going to be using the bully pulpit, flying around on Air Force One, to those states where Democrats [are] standing in the way of their own voters," said Scalise, R-La.
Trump met with GOP lawmakers from both the House and Senate at their retreat in downtown Philadelphia on Thursday.
Lawmakers huddled over their top priorities and repealing and replacing Obamacare will be the party's first legislative move. But they'll need some Democratic support in the Senate to fully replace the law.
Among the proposals Republicans are considering is one that would allow people to purchase insurance policies from states other than where they live, which proponents believe will lower costs.
"If they want to block that, try to play partisan politics, Donald Trump is going to be calling them out in their home states," Scalise said. "That is going to change the game."
