I’m curious to see how Democrats react to this. As much as they hate Comey for his role in the campaign, they have the same dilemma here that the Senate has with Tillerson. Namely, the alternative might very well be worse. There’s at least a chance that Comey will demonstrate some independence from Trump, if only to try to rehab his new reputation on the left as a right-wing hack. There’s less of a chance that a handpicked Trump appointee to head the FBI will. If you’re Nancy Pelosi, do you really want to hear the words “FBI Director Corey Lewandowski”?

Which raises the question: Why doesn’t Trump want to handpick a new FBI director?

The optics of this aren't good imo.  They already blame Comey for helping to "steal the election" from the Hildabeast.

Supposedly the Director of the FBI is a ten year appointment.

There would be nothing abnormal for Trump to leave him in place.

IMO, Trump just doesn't want another Senate Confirmation and subject him to that 'bloodshed'...plus, he's got a lot more exciting things to do each day.

An FBI director, that lays out in detail, a perfect case for prosecution in public - and then REFUSES to prosecute because in his estimation her intentions were not bad, is a Director who is derelict in his duties to carry out the Agency's mission - and as such - should be fired.

Because either politics or bad judgment interfered with his ability to enforce the law.
