Spicer skips over mainstream media in first briefing

President Trump's White House sent a clear message to major media outlets on Monday: You don't matter as much anymore.

The White House for years has deferred to newswires and major TV networks, all of whom are represented in the first row of the White House briefing room, for the first several questions at the daily briefing. But on Monday, White House press secretary Sean Spicer called on very different group of reporters.

He first called on the New York Post. Then, the Christian Broadcasting Network. That was followed by Univision and Fox Business.

Spicer then took a question from Urban Radio Network, and then finally the Associated Press, which up until now has usually gotten the first question.

He didn't skip over them...the Examiner is playing fast and loose with their title.

They all got their questions in...he just started with the back row...which I have no problem with.

Hopefully it was better than Saturday. I've never seen such a thing. Little weasely guy comes out with bloodshot eyes and haranges the media with a high pitched voice for 10 minutes. Pretty ridiculous IMO.

Uh-oh...this won't make the "off with their heads" crowd happy.

While doing so, Spicer moved to dial down the temperature with the media after a heated dispute broke out Saturday, when he excoriated reporters for allegedly underplaying President Trump’s inauguration turnout.

Spicer joked Monday that he wouldn’t be claiming his predecessor Josh Earnest’s title as most-popular press secretary any time soon, and went on to acknowledge he made a factual mistake.

“Knowing what we know now, we can tell that WMATA’s numbers are different,” Spicer said, referring to the agency that controls the Metro system. He said he was operating off stats given to him, and didn’t pull them from “thin air.”

He also noted the media routinely publish corrections, and said the administration “should be afforded the same opportunity.”

At least...unlike Josh "Not So" Ernest...he's willing to admit when he's wrong...instead of doubling down on stupid.

Good...the need to be reminded...in an adult way...that they aren't the center of the media universe.

Like I've said previously...there are better ways to handle putting the media in their place than the "kill 'em all" mentality some called for.

This is one of those ways.

ABC News had film of some puke making Spicer promise that he wouldn't lie to them. Funny, that never bothered them with Obie's mouthpieces...

Likewise, I have no problem at all with this administration pointing out media lies every time they do it.

Even though there may not be much time to discuss actual issues afterwards.
