UN passes resolution calling for end to Israeli settlements
By Harper Neidig - 12/23/16 02:24 PM EST

The U.N. Security Council on Friday passed a resolution demanding an end to Israeli settlement building in occupied territories.

The U.S. had the ability to veto the resolution but abstained from doing so, despite pressure from President-elect Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

US abstains in key Israel vote, clearing way for condemnation of settlements
Fox News, Dec 23

A "shameful" abstention by the U.S. in a United Nations vote Friday allowed passage of a resolution condemning Israeli settlement expansion in the occupied West Bank.

The UN Security Council resolution was put forward by New Zealand, Malaysia, Venezuela and Senegal after Egypt withdrew it Thursday under pressure from Israel and U.S. President-elect Donald Trump.

It was adopted with 14 votes in favor, to a round of applause, after U.S. Ambassador Samantha Power abstained. It is the first resolution the Security Council has adopted on Israel and the Palestinians in nearly eight years.

"The resolution is too narrowly focused on settlements when we all know, or all should know" there are other factors that cotribute to the conflict between Israel and Palestinians.

Reaction from U.S. Republicans and Jewish leaders around the world was swift and sharp.

"It was to be expected that Israel's greatest ally would act in accordance with the values that we share and that they would have vetoed this disgraceful resolution," said Israel's Ambassador Danon. "I have no doubt that the new U.S. administration and the incoming UN Secretary General will usher in a new era in terms of the UN's relationship with Israel."

House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis., blasted the Obama administration for undermining America's historic Middle East ally.

"This is absolutely shameful," Ryan said. "Today's vote is a blow to peace that sets a dangerous precedent for further diplomatic efforts to isolate and demonize Israel."

The Obama White House, under heavy pressure from the Israeli government and its supporters to veto the resolution, kept everyone guessing until the vote whether it would stop shielding Israel from council resolutions and permit it to pass by abstaining.

The resolution, warning that Israeli settlement expansion is “steadily eroding the two-state solution and entrenching a one-state reality,” calls on Israel to “immediately and completely cease all settlement activity in occupied territories, including East Jerusalem.” It repeated the longstanding UN position that all settlements on land Israel conquered in 1967 are illegal under international law.

A senior Obama administration told The Jerusalem Post on Friday it was not behind the resolution, insisting that charges from Israel to the contrary are baseless.

"To be clear: from the start, this was an Egyptian resolution," a senior official told the Israeli English-language news outlet. "The Egyptians authored it, circulated it, and submitted it for a vote on Wednesday evening before asking for a delay and subsequently removing their sponsorship. A group of other Security Council members, not including the United States, is now moving forward the Egyptian text."

Egypt withdrew the resolution after Israel asked Trump to intercede with President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, but four other countries -- New Zealand, Malaysia, Venezuela and Senegal -- then stepped in to sponsor it.

On Friday, Egypt said Trump had called Sisi, a highly unorthodox move for a man who is not president yet.

Incoming Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., backed by other senators, had urged the Obama administration to veto the resolution.

"I am strongly opposed to the U.N. putting pressure on Israel through one-sided resolutions. An abstention is not good enough. The Administration must veto this resolution," he said in statement.

***
A top U.S. senator who oversees funding for the U.N. threatened on Friday to pull financial support for the international body if it moves forward with the resolution, and for any nation that backs the measure.

Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., who heads the subcommittee that controls foreign aid, said in a statement: "If the United Nations moves forward with the ill-conceived resolution, I will work to form a bipartisan coalition to suspend or significantly reduce United States assistance to the United Nations."

Yesterday they were saying Egypt was going to rescind.  :(  January 20 can't come soon enough for me.

Egypt withdrew the resolution @Unlimited.   New Zealand, Malaysia, Venezuela and Senegal -- then stepped in to sponsor it.

I am just livid.  Simply livid.  Obama had to ensure that he put the screws to Netanyahu and make it harder for Trump before he left.  I absolutely despise that POS we have had for the last 8 years.

Aye.

We will have to bear this arrogant POS as he lectures us for the next 40 years on what should be done in this country as he spends taxpayer dollars jetsetting around.

I find myself actually yearning for Jimmy Carter now instead.

Let the UN "condemn" whomever they wish.

They have no power to "enforce" anything against the Israelis...

At least Carter shut up and did some good (I think Habitat for Humanity is a decent cause) after leaving office.

well, let's see what we got.

we have a guy who has said that he will, 'Stand with the Muslims', in his own book.

we have a guy who is named Barak(Arabic for blessed) Hussein(cousin of Muhammed or King in Arabic) Obama (some kind of Muslim tribal name in North Africa)

There is not now and never has ever been a Christian with the name 'Hussein'.

And yet we are surprised that he turns out to be a radical Muslim turncoat?

Ok? Whatever you say man? I guess I'm just a fool for questioning this whole thing from the beginning.

If it EVER had any the UN has far outlived it's usefulness to the USA!

Did the Camp David accords occur under Carter? With some bloodshed of course, it seems Egypt and Israel have had somewhat amiable relations since.

The U.N. may have sealed their fate with this vote. They are just proving everything that everyone already thought of the U.N.

By bringing this attention to themselves now, they are going to get Trump and his team motivated to do something about the farce that is the U.N.

Reality check.

Israel has nuclear weapons.

Israel is a tiny country.

Iran and a few other Islamic countries have sworn to destroy Israel as in taking Israel off of the world maps as if it never existed.  This threat, promise, is made each and every day by these Islamic countries.

When the world deserts Israel and these countries attack, Israel will nuc the hell out of some of its Islamic neighbors.  Israel will not go down without as big a fight as they can muster.  This is their well known war play.

Thank Obama for lighting the fire that is more likely than any other existing conflict to start the next nuclear war.

We cannot get this Islamic socialist moron out of the white house soon enough.

Obama may not be a practicing Muslim but he never misses a chance to support the interests of Islam over the interests of our nation and the Christian, Catholic, and Jewish believers.
